Next year, one of the original pulp heroes is returning to the big screen in The Legend of Tarzan. Edgar Rice Burroughs’ iconic creation has been the subject of close to 200 films, and former True Blood star Alexander Skarsgård is the latest in a long line of actors to portray the Lord of the Jungle.
Tarzan is so famous as a jungle hero that it’s easy to forget that he’s also an English lord by birth. The Legend of Tarzan plays with that mythology by bringing Tarzan a.k.a. John Clayton III and his wife, Jane (Margot Robbie) back to England where they have settled in as Lord and Lady Greystoke. In the newly released trailer for The Legend of Tarzan, George Washington Williams (Samuel L. Jackson) has a particularly hilarious reaction when he sees how “civilized” Tarzan has become.
Don’t expect that to last. As depicted in the trailer, Tarzan and Jane will have to return to Africa, where Jane finds herself a prisoner of Captain Rom (Christoph Waltz). And yet she just can’t help smiling when she hears Tarzan’s famous yell in the distance and Rom realizes that the Lord of the Jungle is coming to reclaim his wife.
The trailer touches upon Tarzan’s famous origin story, as the female ape Kala encounters baby Tarzan for the first time. The clips also provide a glimpse of Chief Mbonga (Djimon Hounsou) as Tarzan swings through the jungle and battles one of the apes.
Harry Potter helmer David Yates directed The Legend of Tarzan, which will be released on July 1, 2016.
