The Indoor Kids #67: GameMaster Howard!

Kumail and Emily sat down to talk with Howard Phillips, who has an impressive resume. He was one of the original workers in Nintendo’s first American warehouse, which meant he shipped out Donkey Kong cabinets in his early days, and this led to product testing all Nintendo games, setting up the tips and tricks hotline, developing games himself, and co-creating Nintendo Power magazine. He’s done it all, and we only meant to talk to him for 20 minutes but ended up talking to this amazingly inspirational legend of a dude for over an hour. Plus, Kumail and Emily talk about NBA 2K13 and Dishonored!

  • I initally laughed at the idea of Jay-Z “producing” the game, but apparently he convinced Charles Barkley and Scottie Pippen to allow themselves to be in the game. The two wanted to receive more money for their faces to be included in the Dream Team, but Hov made one call, and boom, it happened.

  • Honestly sometimes Emily really does annoy me.. more so in. The earlier episodes and I got over it but the feeling is coming back. You are having a sit down with someone and he is telling you a story that EVERYONE is interested in. Yet you always want to interrupt and send the conversation in another direction. As far as I know you are a co-host to Kamils shows. Your not a director ,the show doesn’t need direction. If you are talking to someone and the conversation is going.long that must mean because.its.good so stop trying to fuck it up. Btw his life story was way more interesting than the kickstater that you were so eager to talk about.

  • Another great podcast and interview. However, I’m not a huge fan of this new co-host they’ve had on for the past 2 podcasts. This new guy, a.k.a. the wind, is making it harder and harder to get through the podcast. An hour turns into an hour and a half, when you have to keep rewinding and adjusting the volume at certain points throughout. Otherwise, as I said before, this was another good one. Keep up the good work!

  • NBA 2K13 is a great game.. Come on dude.. Don’t let your wife talk crap about a game you love and she obviously doesn’t even play..

And I really wish Dishonored was a bit longer.. It’s all over before you even get settled playing it,,

  • I know this is about the 3rd time that Retro Gamer has been mentioned and I thought it worth letting you know that you can get it digitally (via Zinio or via a specific app on iOS)

  • Guys…I love the show, but this interview included the worst audio quality I’ve ever heard on any sort of audio medium. I’ve heard interviews from the 30’s with Herbert Hoover that sounded better. As I said though, it’s generally a great show, and I thank you for putting it out!

  • Thanks so much for this, pretty much my favourite podcast and this was a really interesting story. Agree about the Nintendo d-pad the snes controller is perfect for fighting / platform games.

  • I LOVE EMILY. I have a huge aural crush on her. She is smart and funny and honest and a gamer. This podcast got 200% better when she came on and it was dope in the first place. Thanks E&K for working hard making this amazing cool free thing that makes me smile every week. GUSH.

  • Yeah I’m a big Emily fan as well though not in a weird way – she and Kumail seem perfect for each other. If anything I’d rather just here K and E talk and the guest go off and make a sandwich in the meantime or something. I find myself wondering things like what new tv series do K and E like, etc, not just game stuff.

  • Emily is the bomb. She is the perfect foil to Kumail — they balance each other out wonderfully. Marriage amirite. I wish the audio had been a little better, because halfway through I felt like I was going crazy and hearing voices/wind voices in my head. It may also be because I am legit crazy.

  • Holy Gold Gat wielding Cats that was an awesome episode. I hadn’t thought of Howard in a long time. I got a few issues of the fan mail back in the day before Nintendo Power. I remember reading Howard and Nester back in the day but cannot in the life of me remember the comics. I wish the wind was not so windy. All in all… great podcast.

P.S. Why does the internet seem to hate women?

  • Dude, Emily is MADE for this podcast. Her and Kumail balance off each other so well. When Kumail gets sensitive about a topic, Emily pulls him back. When Emily says something real about growing up with videogames, Kumail is there to crack a timely joke. Can they have misses sometimes? Of course.

But let me say this: most videogames podcasts are filled with over-reacting, yelling dudes who do not realize that most people who play videogames are not completely committed to the lifestyle. These two guys, though, balance between the mainstream and hardcore, and I love it. Haters are gonna motherfucking hate.

  • @Excom- I agree about his life story being really fucking cool, so I was definitely down with hearing about it, but I’m fairly certain promoting his Kickstarter project was a part of the deal(handshake or napkin, Emily?) that got him on the show. Not getting the hate either, although, I must say, sometimes Emily’s voice can be a tad on the shrill side, but that’s totally my opinion and in no way an indictment of her character.

Fuck You, Wind! You owe me a pair of earbuds (totally thought the line was fucked and threw them away)

  • Could Emily go on Riki’s show? Riki’s not really a gamer, so I’m not sure how well bringing her to Indoor might work, unless perhaps Indoor could do a show with her offering her first impressions of classic games she’s never played before..

The reason I ask, is because of the similarity between Riki and Emily’s voices, and how Riki could spontaneously ask Emily questions as if one were the other, and few could tell the difference..

  • Kumail is super funny and Emily is pretty cool. The traveling outdoor podcast’s sound quality kinda blows. Decided not to listen to the Howard ep. Love the rest accept the pinball bar because I’m super jealous of the sound of people out having fun when I’m at work :)
