The First Trailer For TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Has Arrived

After months of speculating on the look of everyone’s favorite pizza loving reptiles, the first trailer for the Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been released courtesy of Paramount:

You know what? This doesn’t look that bad, and definitely looks like the best TMNT movie we were going to get in the age of the gritty reboot. While initial images may have left viewers skeptical, seeing the turtles in their final, larger than life film form works, and once they start talking, they do seem to come to life in a way that can work for a live-action feature film. Also, this movie features William Fichtner, and William Fichtner can do no wrong.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theaters August 8th.

  1. Oh come ON says:

Any kid who grew up in the 80’s with the Playmates toy line knows- turtles accessorizing looks stupid. Not that these turtles need any help, they already look really stupid to begin with.

  2. Wade Wilson says:

If you can get past the lips/noses and the fact that nothing in this even remotely exudes TMNT (born in the 70’s and am a DIEHARD TMNT fan) this looks truly awful. These turtles look @#$%ing retarded.
I envy those who can’t see what 5h1t this is.

  3. superskullmaster says:

Ok first of all SHUT THE HELL UP. Second of all SHUT THE HELL UP. There is no pleasing some people. They got rid of the Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles and you people are still bitching. I’m 31 years old so I know the turtles story from beginning to end and I have to say i’m excited. It’s called a reboot for a reason. The fact that you don’t like something about it will not change the fact that it’s happening. I for one will be going to see it. If you wanna bitch about movies getting raped how about what they did with Dragonball in Dragonball Evolution. I don’t think you will find a single Dragonball and Dragonball Z fan who gave that movie a thumbs up. But you know what, even that POS still made millions. So bitch and moan all you want, they are going to release the movie, it will make enough to warrant a sequel, and you will continue to bitch and moan while they laugh their way to the bank.

  4. Jrockmond says:

Damn nothing but haters in the world, always fucking complaining about something. To all the haters out there ask yourself one question can you do a better job?
If so go and do it better, if not shut the fuck up!!

  5. David says:

Here’s the truth. You’re all going to go see it…whether you think it’s going to be good or absolutely horrible! You’ll be there…whether it’s to support or to judge. You’ll weigh in positively, or negatively. TRUTH: It’s already been made. It’s already going to be released in August. It’s a thing whether you want the turtles to look different, or shredder to come from a different background, or anything else! GUESS WHAT!?! It’s DONE!! I’ve been a turtle fan since the day I saw the first cartoon on TV, but at least give this a chance. Michael Bay is an action director. This is bad in that he’s destroyed things before (Transformers), but, with the plea of fans, it seems he has realized that there can be more to a FRANCHISE like the Ninja Turtles than action. Yes, there will be action and crazy amounts of dramatics, but the absolute best thing I took away from the trailer is the banter between the turtles. During the snowy downhill sequence, Raphael yells out “Donny!!” Donny immediately extends his staff to thrust Raph forward exclaiming “Batter Up!!” If I’m the only one who got goosebumps thinking back to the original movies (COMBAT COLD CUTS!!!) from this and the other displays of the turtles’ personalities (Leo’s seriousness and Mikey’s goofiness) then I fear for the franchise’ following. This movie is done and happening. Why don’t we go into it with an open mind and just enjoy the thing we grew up with. These turtles are the imaginary, the impossible….our heroes!!

  6. HLK19 says:

Personally, I think this looks pretty good. I mean, yeah the turtles looks weird, and the story-line is different, however with the way they looked years ago in the movies, they look so real in this! Also, I don’t think anyone knows how the turtles would look if they were actually in real life. As for the story-line, I’m not quite sure what to think about it. I’m still skeptical about the movie, yet I will definitely go see it to see how it turns out.

  7. wylie says:

Flipping awesome,, can’t wait, evey one has an option… but Michael bay is an awesom director

  8. Stu says:

Did anyone else feel like they were watching a trailer for “Battleship 2”? Bay does know what a ninja is, right? I won’t pay to watch my childhood get turned into one giant CG explosion after another.

In this country, the only REAL vote we have is with our dollar. If we want a better “Turtles,” we have to let them know this one isn’t it. Don’t buy a ticket unless you want this to be the future of the entire franchise. Your choice…

  9. jizzme says:

so they are now green monkeys or should they be turtles?

  10. Tina says:

    This looks beyond awful :(

  11. Jeremy says:

I want to believe that it’ll be good… and I will very likely see it at some point. But having Mr Bay as the producer of the film just really doesn’t feel that it will have any significant quality outside of cool effects.

  12. Tracy says:

Looks meh, but reserving judgement until it comes out. Will be worth a Saturday night and some popcorn.

  13. Inukazoki says:

The purists need to calm down… I would totally watch this and I’m from the age of Saturday morning TMNT~
Give the movie a chance and don’t just judge this movie based on the short trailer…

  14. Lisa Porter says:

I agree changing the origin is wrong. Especially if they do it by splicing with human dna, and that’s what it looks like. This lady finds that idea just gross. Why not leave it turtles that got gooped on by radioactive muck. Use today’s technology and talent to make them look and move better but stick with the base story line. The turtles worked for so long because they are family friendly good guys with a great sense of humor. Why mess up a good thing? Bigger, better blow outs does not a good movie make.

  15. Chris McBride says:

Very . . . Michael Bay , I think the same trailer saoundtrack was used from Transformers.
Otherwise I am Excited !!! Would be great to see Amy Pond ( can never remember actresses name ) as April though !!!

  16. Techno Spice says:

This trailer was bad and this reviewer should feel bad.
    – April O’Neil isn’t a plucky redhead, she’s a fainting, pale dark brunette.
    – Turtles are apparently actually orcs from LOTR
    – Let’s make origin story intentionally sinister and unbearably cliche
    – Trade fun and martial arts for explosions

  17. Pizza delivery guy says:

    Hell yeah why not?
I grew up with those guys being those guys and I don’t change at all.

I don’t get why people always act like this takes something away – it adds, that’s what ot does.

Being born ’84 I don’t really know the first comics but as far as I know, they had a much darker theme than the cartoons – so going Bay actually fits the setting this time or what?

    I’m going to watch it.

  18. Joel says:

The trailer is a trailer a bunch of clips put together, not at all how it will apear in the actual movie. so let’s stop this madness and wait for the movie to come out and then we can make a well rounded critique. Also when has any movie been exactly like the story where’s the fun and art in it, if it was the same each time it would get old. Everyone has there own opinion, view, preference whatever. constructive criticism is the only way you should voice your opinion not calling names this isn’t 1st grade. I love tmnt and I can’t wait to see the movie bad or good. Let’s not forget the old movies they trailed the line of cheesy but it’s TNMT !! For crying out loud not a documentary on some guy so if it has new twists and turns let it be it’s a fictional story. If you don’t want to see it don’t no one cares believe me their har been worse things in life.

  19. vismund says:

    ugh this looks terrible

  20. Tiffany says:

I think the reason people are bummed out is bc it was such an iconic part of our childhood at a time where things were so weird and unique. To be accepted reboots have an to maintain a certain “spirit” from the original and this might have just missed that element. I am bummed b/c it will be along time before we can hope for another reboot after this dust settles. It would have been cool!

  21. So, there he goes again fixing things that aren’t broken. Thanks Michael Bay. Even if the movie doesn’t suck now I have to deal with a rewrite of a childhood happyness.

Oh well….. guess I’m gonna have to wait and see. :I

  22. Kiel says:

Not a fan of Megan Fox but could be worse. And to the IDIOT josh who stated anybody but shredder or April’s father could have created the turtles. Shredder has ALWAYS created the turtles. Whether you are talking the 80s cartoon where poured the ooze down the drain himself to kill Yoshi, or being a utron who crashed the ship that caused the ooze to be created from the 2003/comic line it was always his fault

  23. Ringo says:

Just saying. There’s nothing original about it. That was kind of the point.

  24. Chelsea says:

My only issue is that Megan Fox is April O’neil. Really? Michael Bay couldn’t find someone perfect for the job not someone he’s banged and dumped before. Wasn’t she was fired from Transformers for calling Michael Bay a Nazi?

  25. Ringo says:

I love the old origin story, and the original movie, and although I’ll never see this, I’m surprised no one has brought up that The turtles were originally an amalgamation and parody of everything that was wrong with comics at the time. In conclusion- who cares.

  26. Tiffany says:

I had no expectations for this but now… not into Fox as Oneil and so far it seems like they took a truly original story and shoved it into a typical action frame w too much CGI. W/ the visuals from movies like District 9 how not even kids will be able to enjoy this. It has no charm or character, best case scenario it just fades away!

  27. Jonathan says:

I’m not a big fan of the idea that they changed the origin story. I liked the story that it was an accident better.

  28. matt says:

looks daft, which is fine. they changed the story….so what. it’s not like they’re re-writing shakespeare (which is often done anyway).
Megan fox, not bothered. Bay?> well prepare for explosions
    William Fichtner, awesome.
but as long as it’s entertaining, it’ll be okay, hopefully it’ll be better than Transformers 2 (and 3), with less random chickens in it!
However, remember, this is a movie primarily made for kids to sell merch!. kawabunga.

  29. Kwame says:

With the exception of a white Shredder, I thought the trailer wasn’t bad. Of course with Michael Bay producing (not even Directing PRODUCING), there’s going to be nerd rage and bias.

  30. Tony says:

I think some of those making comments are missing a largely important value of this movie. It’s a “reboot”. Things change in reboots… sometimes for the better (see Starbuck in BSG as a girl)… sometimes for the worse (see Robocop).

Personally, I’ll watch it… but only as a rental.

  31. gonzogazi says:

    boo urns!

  32. Ben Z says:

That has convinced me even more that this movie will be bad.

  33. mark says:

So u get to bash the director of transformers so he cuts you from future films and even has the robots call her a bitch in the movies. Just to bring her in on this to givw her more millions after she bashes you before?

  34. Dan says:

Ok,, only thing I don’t like is Megan Fox. I’m also tired of all the DAMN nerd rage. I realize Michael Bay is a Hack, but come on at least watch more than a 30 second spot before you get all Judgey.

  35. Amarie says:

I’ve got to say… those last 4 seconds got me interested. It’s just so like the Michaelangelo I remember, if all the Turtles characters are as true (in nature) to the cartoons, I might overlook Megan Fox as April. A white Schredder is kind of unforgiveable though, Mr. Fichtner talent non-withstanding. And also, is it just me or are the turtles black? Is that ok? I’m confused.

  36. skiitlejuice says:

Way too little to go on from that trailer to even begin to get a sense of what this movie will be like. From what IS there, we can only gather that there will be exposition, ninja turtles, and superfluous slow motion. Some shots sure looked pretty though.

  37. Austin says:

First understand that it’s a movie about TURTLES who are NINJAS, once you accept that as the concept of the movie you will enjoy yourself.

  38. As someone who’s earliest memories involve TMNT, I’m excited about this. This trailer has made my birthday pretty damn awesome. I don’t understand the hate, probably the same people that pissed all over the Star Trek reboot.

I can’t wrap my head around why anyone would want to live in a world with no creative freedoms. The IDW comics don’t follow the same path as previous iterations of the Turtles story, and it’s the best one, in my opinion.

I guess I can kind of see someone having an issue with the size of the turtles, but who cares? They’re mutants! Just because they’ve never been so big before, doesn’t mean any rules were set on sizes. Compare Splinter, the turtles, and Old Hob. Rats, turtles, and cats. They’re pretty close in size once exposed to mutagen, yet the animals have quite a bigger difference. Why can’t the turtles be 7 feet tall?

  39. RickC says:

I dislike when comments are malicious.

Before watching the trailer i cant say that i was too excited for this re-imagining. Micheal Bay and Megan Fox’s involvement being mostly responsible…but Good trailer. I’m interested in seeing this.

  40. blurrycure says:

the only thing that worries me is the turtles’ origin in this film…

the line “create/ing heroes” in the trailer implies that they weren’t created by accident like they originally were…

if it is gonna end up using the “they were created on purpose” thing i’ll be a bit disappointed. especially if it’s used as a “plot twist” because that’s just a lame twist.

however: my saying that doesn’t mean i won’t ever watch the movie and it doesn’t mean don’t update the TMNT in anyway shape or form or i’ll eat your souls, but the turtles’ origin was fine as is, there’s no need to mess with it, y’know?

  41. Dave K. says:

I am still convinced that this is going to suck, and suck hard… but that’s more from reports about what the movie is like. The trailer isn’t bad at all, unless you didn’t even watch it and want to complain.

  42. Daniel says:

I lowered my expectations given the director and the choice of casting Megan Fox, but it looks promising. I don’t think it will damage the brand. However, as a first teaser/trailer, that DID NOT capture the playful essence that is TMNT. Hopefully we’ll see more well-thought-out versions as we move closer to the release date.

  43. MisterUnderhill says:

    Bayformers. In a halfshell.

  44. William Fichtner was in Armageddon…

  45. Josh says:

This looks awful. You know who created the Ninja Turtles? LITERALLY ANYBODY BUT THE SHREDDER AND APRIL’S FATHER. And don’t get me started on making Shredder a white dude. The character is Japanese. It is VITAL to his back story. And thanks to Michael Bay, the Turtles are now big action stars. Even though the whole point of being ninjas is to be subtle and secretive. Seriously, this movie looks beyond terrible. Making them aliens would have been a step UP from this pile of crap.

  46. FourofFiveWits says:

“…looks like the best TMNT movie we were going to get in the age of the gritty reboot.” This just sounds so sad. “Well, they’re not going to give us what we’d like to see, so let’s settle.” Also, I like William Fichtner too as an actor but he should not be playing a former Japanese NInja unless they complete change the idea of Shredder, which to be fair they might.

  47. Shaun K says:

Couldn’t agree more! I was bracing myself for much worse than this. Only thing I still don’t like is Megan Fox. This looks like it could be pretty ok. It’s not going to be Dark Knight or Avengers but it can still be really entertaining and fun. Color my bandana cautiously optimistic!

Still loving the Zulli-esque style of the turtles. Though their extra accoutrements are still a bit odd to me.

  48. sdoowhsoj says:

These commenters here are insane. Someone has a different opinion than you and they go off labeling people a “moron” and chastising you because you liked a movie about MUTATED TURTLES. Think to yourself for a little bit. If you think anything beyond quirky and fun is needed for a TMNT movie, you’re not only a bad person, but should be banned from life.

  49. peyton_drinking says:

So when you write for Nerdist to you sign a contract stating you will only say nice things about every nerd related property?

  50. Herbie93 says:

Did we watch the same trailer or are you just a moron?
