The long-awaited Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot movie is officially underway, and after weeks of staggered announcements, the entire cast has been assembled. In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the new Power Rangers team posed together for the first time.
From left to right: RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger, Billy Cranston; Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Kimberly Hart; Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, Zack Taylor, and Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, Jason Lee Scott; with Becky G as the Yellow Ranger, Trini Kwan.
You may have noticed that Billy and Zack have different ethnicities in the Power Rangers reboot, but that’s not all that’s changed. In this incarnation, the Power Rangers team aren’t friends and they’re described as “disenfranchised and disparate” when they’re called upon to team up and face Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks).
It appears that the producers of the Power Rangers film are attempting to give the Rangers more characterization than they had on the original TV show. It’s too soon to say how successful they will be, but the attempt is admirable. Let’s face it: The first Power Rangers team had pretty one-note personalities when the series began. That needed to change in this new incarnation.
While the new Power Rangers costumes have yet to be seen, director Dean Israelite teased the eventual reveal of the WETA-designed outfits, which he called, “really modern, edgy, badass, aspirational quality.”
“We’ve really pushed ourselves to make them feel different from any other superhero costume that’s out there,” Israelite told EW. “One key that’s different to the Power Ranger suits is that they’re not really suits that people get into. They’re suits that morph onto our kids, so they already have this almost metaphysical quality to them.”
The Power Rangers movie is currently scheduled to be released on March 24, 2017.
