The Big Winner: METROID Will Be the Next Rainfall Fantasy Filmmaking Project

Your votes are in and Rainfall Fantasy Filmmaking has chosen their next project: a fan film based on Metroid is going directly into development.

Rainfall says that the goal of the project, which is a collaboration with the fine folks at Nerdist (hey, that’s us!), is “to craft the best Metroid short film experience, which is no easy task.” With that in mind, in the coming days in weeks ahead, the studio will be offering regular updates on The Rainfall TV page, so fans can track the progress of the project.

The Metroid franchise beat out fellow competitors She-Ra, Black Panther, Final Fantasy VI, and Red Sonja in a round of fan-based voting. The Metroid-based film would follow their Wonder Woman short from last year.

So where would you want to see Rainfall take Samus and the Metroid story? It’s one of Nintendo’s most carefully-protected properties, one which the publisher has seldom let out of its own hands (not counting the controversial Other M from Team Ninja, which gave Samus additional backstory).

The first game is nearing its 30th anniversary, which introduced us to bounty hunter Samus Aran and her long-running battle against the Space Pirates, who want to control the Alien-inspired critters which give the series its name. And there’s a chance we might be getting one (or more) games in the series for the current generation of consoles. Speaking with Kotaku after E3, Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi teased both a 2D and 3D Metroid game in the series’ future:

“So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we’ll be able to share something about them.”

Could we be getting a fan film and a new game? Who would you like to see play Samus Aran? Let us know on Twitter or in the comments below!

Hopefully Nintendo won’t shut this one down like the last Metroid fan film…
