Since time immemorial, man has looked to the stars and wondered, “Will there ever be a feature film that combines most of the cast of Saturday Night Live and other assorted comedians with the high-stakes, fast-paced world of intramural flag football?” Well, the gods have heard your pleas and delivered unto us the trailer for a film called Balls Out.
Now, this film is not to be confused with the 2009 Seann William Scott/Randy Quaid vehicle, Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach; rather, this is a new sports comedy entirely. Whether or not they exist in a shared universe, however, remains to be seen.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“With graduation, marriage, and an uncertain future on the horizon, fifth year college senior Caleb Fuller (Jake Lacy) decides to do the one thing he vowed to never do again: get the ol’ flag football team back together. Now with the help of his Panther teammates and unorthodox head coach Grant Rosenfalis (Nick Kocher), Caleb must defy all odds and logic if he ever hopes to achieve the intramural football glory he once had.”
Though the trailer doesn’t inspire an awful lot of confidence, the cast — which includes Jake Lacy, Beck Bennett, Jay Pharaoh, Nikki Reed, Kate McKinnon, Brian McElhaney, Nick Rutherford, Nick Kocher, Gabriel Luna, DC Pierson, and Michel Hogan — is another matter entirely. Given the comedic pedigree of the the assembled actors, I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will be a profoundly weird albeit dumb comedy in the grand tradition of Hot Rod and MacGruber. Plus, the film, originally titled Intramural, debuted at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and won the “Best Guilty Pleasure” Audience Award at the Seattle International Film Festival, so at least there’s that.
Balls Out opens in theaters and VOD on June 19.
