Unlike the 2004 Van Helsing movie, starring Hugh Jackman (pictured above), the new TV iteration will focus on Vanessa Helsing—daughter of the famous Abraham Van Helsing—as she finds herself resurrected five years in the future, only to discover that vampires have taken over the world and she is humanity’s only hope of winning it back.
The new take on Van Helsing was conceived by noted playwright, director, and screenwriter Neil LaBute, who will serve as the showrunner. Nomadic Pictures is set to produce Van Helsing‘s 13-episode order from Syfy.
“Van Helsing represents a new mythology in sci-fi by challenging traditional vampire rules,” explained Nomadic Pictures Co-Chairman Chad Oakes. “The series is unique in exploring a world completely dominated by vampires, while the human characters have to learn the importance of working together to ensure their survival.”
Abraham Van Helsing originated in Bram Stoker’s Dracula as an experienced vampire hunter and Dracula’s primary adversary. There’s rarely a film or a TV adaptation of Dracula without a Van Helsing to oppose him. And if Abraham Van Helsing isn’t around, his descendants are often tasked to carry on the family tradition, just as Vanessa Helsing will soon learn.
Syfy has not yet set a premiere date for Van Helsing, but we’ll be ready and waiting to tune in once it has one.
