You know that commercial purporting to show the origin of the Oreo, in which a guy with his mouth full of cookie tries to say “I dunno” but it comes out “Oreo”? I imagine that if one were to ask the company, “What are you thinking?” when they pick some of their newer flavors, they might utter a similar response. I mean, yeah, some of the new tastes like “chocolate chip” make sense, but every once in a while they’ll bust out a “watermelon,” and you wonder why your cookie looks like Play-Doh. Come to think of it, given how many kids have eaten some amount of Play-Doh at some point in their lives–admit it, you did too once–that may be the intention.
So: Swedish Fish is the new one. And while you’re probably working on your own “…said NO-ONE, EVER!” joke in your head, bear in mind that the recent popularity of places like Yogurtland has resulted in all manner of mixed-in ingredients coming into contact that never did before, including gummies and cookies. Somebody, ever, has indeed mashed them together (me, if you must know). And now Nabisco, as seen at Delish.com, has done it more officially, with a very Sith-colored cookie available only at Kroger for a limited time.
The actual flavor of Swedish Fish candy is best described simply as “red”; per Wikipedia, it’s a proprietary blend sometimes theorized to be based on a lingonberry. Pinnacle vodka has made an unofficial infused alcohol that tastes pretty close, and once you’ve won over the vodka drinkers, late-night party snack foods inevitably must follow. Online reviews have been mixed, but I for one can’t wait. If nothing else, the mouth coloration should be amazing.
