Nintendo is coming to Universal Studios Japan, but it’s going to be a few years before fans get to fully experience that upcoming theme park expansion. Fortunately, North American gamers won’t be left out, as both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando are also getting Nintendo themed attractions, although we’d certainly curious about what rides we can look forward to!
In a new video, Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda creator, Shigeru Miyamoto appeared with Universal Creative’s Mark Woodbury as they teased their future plans for all three parks. If you’re looking for specifically announced plans, there are no reveals to be found here. But given the Mario inspired backgrounds of the video, it’s a pretty safe assumption that everyone’s favorite Italian plumber is going to receive one of the primary attractions.
“We are constantly amazed how the park developers are bringing the essence of our games to life in the real world,” said Miyamoto in the video. “Together, we are building it with an eye for what guests will actually experience…We are working very hard to create attractions that can be equally enjoyable to anybody regardless of age…Since we’re really bringing the world to life, I think Mario will feel like he finally came home!”
Given the continued popularity of Zelda and the Pokémon franchises, both seem likely to appear in Universal’s parks as well. But the worlds of Nintendo offer many other possibilities. We’re dying to see a Metroid attraction, or perhaps even rides based on Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers.
The Nintendo expansion at Universal Studios Japan is expected to be complete in 2020, but hopefully we won’t have to wait that long to see the rides pop up in the American theme parks!
