Spike has reportedly ordered a pilot episode for The Mist, which will retain the initial premise of King’s 1980 novella by telling the story of a small town consumed by an otherworldly mist while monstrous creatures roam freely. TV veteran Christian Torpe—best known for creating the Danish series Rita—is slated to write and executive produce.
The novella and film version of The Mist followed David Drayton, his son, and other residents of the town as they are trapped in a grocery store by unseen monsters. While the story of their eventual escape from the grocery store was compelling, it probably can’t be maintained for more than a few episodes. Meaning, in order to expand the story, our protagonists will likely have to leave the grocery store setting behind, exploring the rest of the town during the incident. The novella was ambiguous about how far the mist had spread, but it suggested that Hartford could be a sanctuary for the survivors.
A television series also offers the opportunity to introduce a larger cast while deep-diving into the mystery at the heart of the event’s origins. Needless to say, there’s a lot of dramatic potential in this project.
