Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens releases on December 17 in the UK, one day earlier than it does stateside. That means that today marks exactly one hundred days until the film releases in theaters, and an unofficial The Force Awakens Twitter page is celebrating with poster releases!
At the moment, there is no statement as to whether these are official posters for the film or just fun mock-ups to celebrate the day. The fact that they come from an unofficial Star Wars fan account rather than the official @StarWars handle is cause for concern. A few have the TOPPS brand logo emblazoned upon them, leading me to believe that these are a collection of promo art pieces for sale along with other merchandise, or as “dorm room” posters instead of theatrical art. Either way, they are pretty awesome and a lot of fun to see, so let’s take a look at some that they have released so far.
I’m sure we can expect a huge influx of poster art in the weeks and months leading The Force Awakens hits theaters, and there may even still be more coming today, since there is a noted absence of Finn. What this art work release also proves is how much the film is going in a direction everyone hoped it would; not relying on the return of old characters or connections to the original Star Wars trilogy to be successful. While the both of the original droid companions make a return in the droid poster and the stormtroopers have been a prominent part of marketing, the film seems to be hoisted on the back of new characters and the story of their adventure as opposed to borrowing much from the original trilogy. Now we just have to wait 100 to 101 days for our next journey into a galaxy far, far away.
