Wow, what a great start. Nintendo kicked off their E3 2015 Direct with the official unveil of a brand new Star Fox title. The game–which they note is neither a sequel nor a remake–is called Star Fox Zero and will be coming to the Wii U Holiday 2015.
The footage shown off was an impressive look at the third-person space shooter in all of it’s classic Star Fox glory. This is the first time our favorite fox is making his way onto the Wii U, which is exciting especially since we haven’t seen an original Star Fox game since 2006 when Star Fox Command hit the Nintendo DS. It was certainly a nostalgia trip to hear good old Peppy Hare telling you to do a barrel roll.
As you can see in the gameplay video above, the Arwing and Landmaster tank vehicles are being joined by the all new Gyro Wing (which looks like a drone) and a Mech Walker–which, according to Shigeru Miyamoto, was originally found in the Star Fox 2 title that was never released.
The interesting thing about the Gyrowing was that, when piloted, the TV displays the standard view while the gamepad screen shows the perspective from the cockpit. With this new view, precision shooting is going to be easier than ever.
After they debuted the gameplay, Nintendo also revealed a special video featuring designer Shigeru Miyamoto. He talks original inspirations for the Star Fox series as well as how Star Fox 2 influenced the new title. Check it out below.
