Once in a while, an idea so delightfully weird comes along that one can’t help but make it a reality. For us, that idea was Slow-mo Destructo, our brand new Spotify mobile-exclusive series in which famous musicians destroy things with a gigantic hammer in ultra slow-motion. But the O. Henry twist to all of this is that they are ostensibly appearing on a game show hosted entirely in Japanese by yours truly and forced to answer seemingly impossible trivia questions. They may be there to simply promote an album, but what follows is a spinning wheel of destiny that leads them to a giant hammer, which they must wield with impunity against a rotating assortment of highly destructible, smashable items.
For our debut episode, rapper Ty Dolla $ign joined me on set to promote his 2015 album Free TC. What he didn’t know is that he would be forced to take up a massive mallet and obliterate glass candy bowls filled to the brim with Skittles. What I didn’t know is that Ty would be blazed out of his mind and constantly taking breaks to eat the Skittles. At one point, during a break in filming, he turned to me and said, “Man this is a waste of Skittles.” He’s not wrong, but that’s not my judgment to make. I exist to enact the will of Slow-mo Destructo and its will is that it’s freakin’ hammer time, baby!
You can watch all six episodes of Slowmo Destructo right now on Spotify’s mobile app and see the likes of Zach Rogue of Rogue Wave, Toby Morse of H2O, Nico and Vinz, comedian Margaret Cho, and Zoe Reign of No Parents wreaking messy havoc with the Hammer of Destiny (not its official name).
We promise they’re only going to get weirder and wilder from here.
