It’s funny when you think about the fact that it’s been nearly five years since James Cameron broke every box office statistic in the book with Avatar. You’d imagine that Fox would have loved to have had two other films in theaters by now, but when you’re the man that made the two highest grossing movies of all time, you kind of get carte blanche to do whatever you please, and that’s where today’s news regarding Avatar 2 comes into play.
For about a month now, many have wondered how Sigourney Weaver was going to be returning to the series following the death of her character, Grace Augustine, in the first film. Well, according to James Cameron himself in an official statement, it’s not going to be through resurrection, but through creation. “Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.”
Unless Cameron’s going to pull a long-lost Augustine twin out of his butt, it’s safe to assume Weaver will be portraying a brand new na’vi character or spirit entity she will embody throughout the course of the film. This is totally doable as all the characters are CG and can be made to look like anyone, so it sounds good to us.
