As of late, Showtime has been keen on the rise in comedy on cable, adding quite a few new comedies to their stable. Over the last few months, they ordered a pilot of Cameron Crowe’s rock concert comedy Roadies, bought a comedy about a law firm from the creator of UK’s Spy as well as one that follows an up-and-coming Jewish stand-up comedian. Their latest addition to their growing comedy development slate is a pilot order for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a “comedy with musical elements” starring and centered around musical comedian Rachel Bloom.
For those not familiar, you might have seen some of Bloom’s work on Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken as she has worked as one of the show’s staff writers. Bloom also does quite a bit of solo performing, having a decidedly dark comedic edge to her songs and dance numbers as you can see in her music video for “NOBODY WILL WATCH THE F*CKING TONY AWARDS WITH ME“. She’s even recorded two albums, one of which is delightfully titled Suck It, Christmas!!! (A Chanukah Album). Having also been featured at Just For Laugh Montreal, Showtime’s interest was peaked and has since attached Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb and writer Aline Brosh McKenna, who has written a number of successful female-driven comedies for the big screen including her adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada. Hopefully, this will make it to series and there will be more musical comedy regularly on television besides Glee.
