“It’s not to ‘improve,’ it’s make it fun, make it different, make it organically different,” said Black while speaking to ComingSoon. “There have been a lot of changes to [Stan Winston’s] design over the years. These different Predator movies have done different things. Ultimately it’s not about design to me, it’s about the story you want to tell…In The Predator we’re doing a lot of upgrades to what you would consider to be the traditional Predator technology and look, but hopefully the story is what’s going to drag people in, not just the attention to the minutiae.”
If there’s one thing that the previous Predator films have taught us, it’s that the camouflage tech of their costumes is not infallible and its sensors can be fooled. If The Predator is really gonna upgrade the outfits’ capabilities, perhaps the new costume should allow these alien hunters to disguise themselves as humans. Or maybe the new costume’s sensors shouldn’t be so overly reliant on scanning for body heat.
There’s nothing currently known about the story of the next movie. The previous film in the franchise, Predators, took place on another planet. That means that there hasn’t been a Predator movie set on Earth since Predator 2 in 1990. (Much like Black himself, we’re not counting the Alien vs. Predator films as canon.) Either way, we’re overdue to see another Predator in the present.
Earlier this year, Arnold Schwarzenegger said that he was planning to meet with Black, with the implication that they would discuss The Predator. Could Schwarzenegger reprise his role as Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer from the first film? If it is up to the actor, the answer would probably be “yes.” He’s already returned to the Terminator franchise and he still wants to star in a King Conan movie. Revisiting another classic role isn’t a foreign experience for Schwarzenegger, and Black has previously indicated that his film is a sequel and not a reboot for the series.
The Predator will be released on March 2, 2018.
