Scream at a Wall: GO DEEP, MEEK IS MURDER, RLYR, and More!

Wipe the blood from your teeth and get in the pit: it’s time for a recap of this week’s best hardcore, metal, and punk rock. We dug through the record crates to find the new tunes we think you need to spin and rage to. Looking for some new death metal to bring into your life? Got you covered. Need some grindcore to get your wedding reception off on the right foot? Say no more. Strap in kiddies, it’s time to rock.

We’re starting off this week with a video premiere from New York hardcore act Go Deep. The track is called “Slumberland” and it’s off the bands recently released album Influence. Don’t let that dreamy title fool you, “Slumberland” is brutal slice of hardcore with a video to match. It’s a tour through an abandoned asylum, a place filled with violence, anger, and torture. If you’re a fan of creepy asylums or good ol’ fashion hardcore, you’ll want a piece of what Go Deep is offering.

Meek is Murder is all kinds of mathy and heavy. They’ve got a new album called Was and you can get a taste with the freshly premiered “Full Hearts, Empty Rooms” below. If this track is any indication, this Kurt Ballou produced album is going to be all kinds of awesome. Fans of bands like These Arms Are Snakes, Frameworks, and Touche Amore will dig this one for sure, so go pre-order at the band’s Bandcamp page. It’s only seven bucks, people.

The new Nails album is finally here and it’s pretty much exactly what we expected. Nails do not mess around, the just crush it on track after track. This is the audio equivalent of eating glass and setting your hair on fire. You’ll Never Be One of Us is a damn fine album and one worthy of Nails discography, no doubt. Check out the tracks “Violence is Forever” and “In Pain” to hear the sort of stuff Nails does better than anybody else. I recommend listening to this at full volume in your garage to really bum the neighborhood out. Suck it, Homeowners Association!

Old Souls is a crazy great record. Wayfarer play some gorgeous metal – black metal, I guess – that is big, engaging, and dark. The guitars have a crunch to them that would be at home on a ’90s alternative Seattle band’s record. The drums never become consumed by double bass or reverb. There’s something inherently grounded about this album, something that other black metal bands lack. You get the sense when you are listening to Wayfarer that you are hearing them exactly as you would live, that it’s real. Old Souls is the kind of metal that sticks with you, pure, dark, and heavy as all hell.

If you want to take a heavy, mind-altering trip and are looking for a soundtrack, RLYR’s Delayer has you covered. This band features members of Pelican and Bloodiest, so you know you’re in for long, thick songs (phrasing!) that will melt your brain right out of your head. This stuff is perfect for writers and artist who like something on while they work that just flows. There are stories buried in these jams, rockin’ stories from the gods of distortion and riffs.

It’s hard to not love Inter Arma. You love post-metal hauntings and sludgy nightmares? Well, you’ll love “Primordial Wound,” a track from Inter Arma’s forthcoming Paradise Gallows. This song takes its time, slowly building doom over a span of ten minutes. It chugs along and gets more and more sinister. This is the kind of metal you listen to after you’ve been awake for four days and are prepared to see the spirits of the old world. It’s a slog, a wicked journey through muck and grim, buried in a wall of sound. The album comes out July 8, just in time to soak your summer in darkness and despair.

(Invisible Oranges)

That’s it for this week. Go forth, throw some horns up, and keep spinning in the black circle. If there’s a metalcore, grindcore, hardcore, or any other -core song you think the world needs to hear, sound off in the comments below. \m/
