Although ’80s cartoon/toy properties like Transformers, G.I. Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and even the Smurfs have found box office success in recent years, for some reason one of the biggest toy properties of the era–Mattel’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe–keeps getting stuck in development hell. Last we heard, the rights to the property were with Sony, and Charlie’s Angels director McG was attached to direct.
Now it seems we might–I repeat, might–have a potential actor to fill the furry shorts and boots of He-Man in a live-action film. According to io9, actor Kellan Lutz, best known for being one of the vampires that’s mostly in the background in the Twilight films, as well as the 2014 mega-flop The Legend of Hercules movie (not the one with Dwayne Johnson; the other Hercules movie that flopped) has Tweeted out a not-so-subtle message about possibly appearing in the Masters of the Universe movie:
Hey @HeManTheMovie and all MOTU fans,
ITS IN GREAT HANDS! 💪⚔

Now, this doesn’t mean that Kellan Lutz is any closer to getting the part, or that this movie is any closer to getting a greenlight. For starters–as The Legend of Hercules proved–Lutz is not exactly a bankable movie star, and no matter how much he looks the part with that very impressive body, I think this movie is going to need some star power in the lead. Of course, it’s possible he’s up for another part (Seriously, if they ask Lutz to play Stinkor or one of the other lesser henchmen, he really should take it, because I don’t think another Twilight movie is on the horizon). But hey…you never know. Maybe Lutz is our new He-Man. He could certainly look the part, as evidenced by Lutz fan Lisa Davis, who tweeted out this image of what he’d look like as Eternia’s champion:
Ok… I admit that does help to sell me a little on the idea. Just a little.
What do you all think of Kellan Lutz as He-Man? And what do you want from a Masters of the Universe movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
