If you are as obsessed with Game of Thrones as everyone else in the world seems to be, 2017 will be a good year for you. At Mipcom in Cannes, Beta Film out of Germany announced that it will be teaming with Game of Thrones producer Frank Doegler and Rome producer Jonathan Stamp to create a new 12-part fantasy series called The Perished Land.
The Perished Land takes place in Talanton, and according to Deadline, Beta says that its beauty is a mixture of Lord of the Rings and Avatar. It is “also a world of vengeful and benign spirits, rituals, superstitions, and the supernatural,” very similar to the Westeros that’s been hinted at for the last 5 seasons.
Doegler and Stamp are writing this original story, and will mirror the history of Talanton with real human history, down to world wars and crises of religion. Since this fantasy world was NOT written by George R.R. Martin, there is some hope that the characters in this story will NOT be ones viewers latch onto emotionally, only to have them ripped from their hands and killed four episodes later.
While aspects of this series are very similar to Game of Thrones, the pedigree behind it makes it worth a look. It’s similar to a police procedural. While the overall premises are similar, it’s the creativity with what you do WITH those similarities that make it stand out.
The Perished Land is scheduled to debut sometime in 2017.
So what do you think? Are you ready for an all new fantasy series by the producer of a fantasy series you can’t stop watching? Are you hoping its catchphrase is “Our seasons come in regular intervals.” Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.
