This December, Disney and Lucasfilm will release Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first of several planned standalone Star Wars films. But before that happens, Marvel Comics is going to introduce some of the new characters from Rogue One.
In a report that originated at Comics Alliance, Marvel revealed the early stages of its Rogue One prequel comics at this morning’s Diamond Comics Retailer Breakfast in Chicago. The Rogue One prequel will consist of a three-issue miniseries and a one-shot, all of which are scheduled to come out in October. The creative teams were not included in the announcement.
Given that we know Rogue One takes place shortly before the original Star Wars movie, it seems likely that the Rogue One prequel comic would take place after Revenge of the Sith as a small band of rebels hatch a heist to steal the plans for the Death Star. At this point, the only thing that Lucasfilm has confirmed is that Felicity Jones’ character in the movie is the leader of that rebel mission.
Because Marvel is also publishing an ongoing Star Wars series that takes place after A New Hope, there’s the possibility that a few of the surviving characters from Rogue One could potentially show up again in that comic next year. Assuming that there are survivors from the Death Star mission. Because Rogue One is a one-off film, director Gareth Edwards doesn’t have to worry about leaving characters alive for a sequel. That said, Rogue One would be a pretty grim film if at least a few of the heroes didn’t make it out intact.
