    Future scary stuff is the next evolution of Reality TV — the Alternate Reality TV. Think Duck Dynasty Opera, or Boston Pops Death Match.
    Not scary enough? How about rat brain transplantation into robotic bodies (roborat)? Or genetically modified slime/blobs? Or a Dr Evil like device that causes climatic changes? Oops, that last one kinda exists.
