Race War Chess Set

20110910-022858.jpg
This feels wrong for some reason, but I guess it isn’t. It’s not racist, as both sides are represented equally. The only message you could derive from it is that every race only keeps animals of the same color. In any case, it’s an interesting civilian twist on the old Civil War chess set. I used to collect chess sets, but I think I’ll let this one go…

e2-e4, everybody!

sidenote: I took this photo at an antique store. The dimensions of the board are about 3’x 3′.

Shows you what Antiquarians know about chess,
and another wrong thing – how about some Queen on Her Colo(u)r action???

    happy trails

    Equal… Separate, but equal.

  4. Trav says:

C4. Just lots and lots of C4.

  5. BenderIsGreat34 says:

Hopefully now that he’s done with Real Steel, Hugh Jackman can take on the murky, dangerous world of underground racist robot chess. The game you thought you knew…will never be the same.

  6. agirlyman says:

Plantation rules Chess, always guaranteed to end in a gun fight!

I bet that was a hit right after the Civil War ended.

Having a black father, and a white mother, I have “mixed” feelings about that Chess set.

  7. Tosser says:

Sorry for the doublepost but: Ahh! A missing article has weakened the sting of my ill-spirited response! Serves me right I suppose.

  8. Tosser says:

@ChessGuy Like that’s only thing wrong with this picture.

Generic retort aside, chess IS your area of expertise so I can’t blame your oversight… we should probably bring in EthicsGuy for this one.

  9. Josh says:

yeah i was pissed til i read the first line, dontprofile

  10. david says:

LOL! the sterotype is wrong acording to this chess set. The cocks are the same size black or white!

  11. Brian Prue says:

    Always bet on Black!

  12. Michelle says:

That chess set should go into the dollhouse, where creepy things belong

  13. Kurt Onstad says:

Unless it’s because of the angle that you shot it from, it bothers me that the black king and queen each have their arm raised in anger (I think the queen is even holding a knife), while their white counterparts have their arms at their sides.

  14. Shawn says:

I love the plantation behind the chess board…

  15. Shawn says:

I love the plantation in the behind the chess board…

  16. paul says:

I think its even more hilarious since both sides have 1 mixed race piece also, the black & white cow and the tan cow. I guess those are moo-lattos

  17. Wade says:

    Pretty racist.

  18. Voodoobones says:

I think it is kind of neat in an “artsy” kind of way. I like how it makes people uncomfortable in a way they can’t identify. It’s like a legal left on a oneway. I’d buy it.

  19. Devin Smail says:

Is that a miniature plantation house in the top right?

  20. Zach says:

If it’s not racist, then why does white ALWAYS get to move first.

  21. Mike says:

How much was it? I want it if you feel like making some money.

  22. Walt says:

Your “white is always right” rule fits well with the overall theme of the board.

  23. TS Hendrik says:

That’s nothing, they also made a checker set that’s black pieces vs Mexicans.

  24. ChessGuy says:

The board is not position right … turn it 90 degrees. Always have a white square at your right hand.

  25. Nathaniel Wedgington Hornswagle III says:

    RACE WAR!

  26. Well that certainly is a thing.

So was this a genuine antique or just something ironic that they were ironically selling as an “antique” ironically?

  27. Ray Duran says:

    Wow. I. Um. Hun.

  28. Austin F says:

    Equal Oppurtunity Offender.
