PEE-WEE’s PLAYHOUSE Coming to Blu-Ray This October

Get prepared to go back to Puppetland, as Shout! Factory (via Entertainment Weekly) have officially announced an October 21st release date for Pee-wee’s Playhouse: The Complete Series on Blu-Ray. All forty-five episodes of the acclaimed and Emmy-nominated show, which ran from 1986-1991, are part of this set, as well as the 1988 Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special. Although ostensibly a children’s show, Pee-wee’s Playhouse was filled with adult humor and innuendo that helped make it one of the top cult television shows of all time with more than just little kids.

For the upcoming box set, Shout! Factory has more than just “digitally remastered” the show, all episodes of this series have been re-edited from their original camera negatives and re-cut in high definition, using original film elements that were in Paul Reubens’ possession all these years. Fans will be able to see details in Chairy, Pterri, Magic Screen, Conky, Floory, Globey, Mr. Kite, Mr. Window, Jambi, Cool Cat, Dirty Dog and Chicki Baby that they’ve never seen before.

In a press release, Shout! Factory had this to say: “We could not be more excited to collaborate with Paul Reubens on this fantastic venture. Pee-wee’s Playhouse is a cultural touchstone for a generation, and its visually dynamic design and offbeat sense of humor were a genuine phenomenon. We are thrilled that this extensive restoration project is underway and look forward to presenting the series, for the first time in incredible high-definition and with behind-the-scenes bonus material. Fans will experience Pee-wee’s Playhouse as never before and share it with a new generation audience.” Aside from the episodes themselves, expect a whole new series of special features created just for this release, making this the definitive set for Pee-wee Herman fans.

That website CLEARLY says it’s also coming out on HD DVD, in MULTIPLE places.  I checked it like 4 times to be sure.  I can’t believe that is actually true, it must be a type-o.
