CHVRCHES and Paramore have always had an implicit dialogue between one another. Whether lyrically, aesthetically, or spiritually, both bands offer uplifting messages that float blissfully on the same wavelength from the speaker into the bottom of your foot as you furiously stomp along. That is why it is so heartening to know that Hayley Williams and the three bandmates in CHVRCHES are IRL buds!
They’re such good friends, in fact, that Hayley Williams once appeared onstage with CHVRCHES at their show in Nashville to sing “Bury It” off their 2015 record, Every Open Eye. It went over so swimmingly that the band invited Williams to sing a verse on a new recording of the song, and it sounds so glove-fits-hand natural, that I had to double check that this wasn’t the album version of the song. Though Hayley is particular about what collaborations she chooses to pursue outside of Paramore, she noted how creatively fulfilling working with Lauren Mayberry and the boys was.
“I feel like Lauren and I really worked well together on the song, vocally,” Williams said in a press release. “I was surprised how natural it felt! ‘Bury It’ has such good energy and I really relate to it emotionally as well. When they asked me to record the parts I had sung live with them, it was a no-brainer.”
Bury it is such a soaring, triumphant anthem that is works perfectly for Hayley and her vocal range. She sounds great on this newly released version, and I hope this means more collaborations in the near future from both parties.
