Drake is a popular musician with tons of money and fame, but he’s not selfish. He wants to give back to a society that has given him so much, to return some of the fortune that life has bestowed on him. At least that’s my theory behind his video for “Hotline Bling”, the one that has brought us so much joy in the forms of memes and parodies. However, even the best intentions can go horribly wrong, a butterfly effect where one absurd video of a man dancing like a grandmother that had a few too many wine coolers at your wedding can suddenly become something that leaves you in an existential crisis, uneasy and unsure of why any of us are here.
That something is this Blink 182/”Hotline Bling” mash-up. Made by YouTube user Doctor Brixx, the video is very well-made, with the music from Drake’s song and Blink 182’s “Adam’s Song” matching up, along with the videos themselves being interwoven. It’s just that…there’s something unsettling about it, and I don’t just mean Drake’s dancing.
This song seems like something that would be playing in a Funhouse, but the kind that actually makes you want to never return to an amusement park ever again. At first it is mostly harmless, like the type of annoying music you might hear while waiting to speak to your cable company, but it just keeps going, like you’ve somehow found yourself in the waiting room of Hell.
“Hotline Blink” seems so obvious as a mashup you can understand why it exists, but all I can hear now are the words of Dr. Ian Malcolm: “Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
