Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set just before the events of A New Hope and really close to the animated series Star Wars Rebels. In that animated series, we’ve seen the burgeoning Rebel Alliance look outside the box for new resources to fight the Empire. Case in point: We watched Hera Syndulla test the B-wing and deem it acceptable and advantageous for the Rebellion to use.
The rebels have to try new vehicles to go toe to toe with Imperials, so it’s no surprise that Rogue One will introduce some fresh designs. One of the new ships was just revealed on The Star Wars Show. Behold, the U-wing in a never before seen still from the next Star Wars film:
Huzzah more alphabet ships! And it’s not just new to Rogue One, it’s new to the Star Wars universe.
Officially called the Incom UT-60D, the U-wing is both fighter and transport. Lucasfilm Story Group Executive Matt Martin explained on The Star Wars Show (the U-wing is revealed at 1:23 in the above video), “It’s a troop transport and gun ship, so it’s there to bring in rebel troops to heavy fire zones and get out as quickly as possible,” he said. “The wings move depending on the situation, and it’s there to both drop off troops and provide air support.”
And this actually isn’t the first time we’ve seen it. “It was sort of secretly unveiled last year at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim where the very first piece of Rogue One concept art is actually showing a U-wing dropping off troops,” Martin said.
What do you think of the U-wing? What other alphabet ships do you hope to see in the galaxy far, far away? Share your thoughts (and maybe sketches?) in the comments.
