Fans of the Preacher comic book series may have noticed that AMC’s commercials seem to be deliberately downplaying some of the wilder elements of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s cult classic. For example, take Cassidy, as played by Joseph Gilgun. AMC’s early descriptions of Preacher have called Cassidy an “Irish vagabond.”
Proinsias Cassidy is Irish, and he’s definitely a vagabond. But that’s far from the full story. You see, Cassidy is also a vampire who is over 100 years old. And AMC is finally acknowledging that fact in a new photo that depicts Cassidy beginning to burn as the sun touches his body.
It’s nice to see that Gilgun can pull off that smile as Cassidy. But the lead character of Preacher is Cassidy’s best friend, Jesse Custer, as played by Dominic Cooper in this series. Jesse is a reverend in a small town when he’s merged with a creature known as Genesis that gives him the power to command almost anyone in creation. That will eventually lead Jesse to reunite with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and Cassidy to go on the ultimate road trip and literally find God.
The first season of Preacher will run for 10 episodes on AMC, with the series premiere slated to drop on Sunday, May 22 after the midseason finale of Fear The Walking Dead.
