A few weeks ago, Bandai Namco released the opening cinematic for Dark Souls III, which taught us a bit more about what we’ll be facing once the game finally launches worldwide on April 12. If that video wasn’t enough to get you pumped for the final entry in the Dark Souls series, the new trailer the publisher just launched certainly will… unless of course, you’re not a fan of the song. Watch the trailer at the top of the page to see what I mean.
Yep, that’s a disturbing rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s hit 1986 track, “True Colors,” performed by Richie Kohan and vocalist Faux Fix. I bet the writers behind the pop sensation (Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg) never saw that one coming! To be fair, neither did we, but that’s the point. The juxtaposition of FromSoftware’s gory gameplay with the singer’s hopeful voice is highly unsettling (and we love it).
Regardless of whether or not you’re into the music, you have to admit, the game looks fantastic. It gave us a closer peek at NPCs, enemies, the macabre setting, and most importantly, the gameplay. I’ve gotten my hands on the title several times now, and can confidently say that Souls fans are going to be pleased with what may very well be the grand finale to the series. The developer has taken all of the best elements from Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, and even Bloodborne, and tossed in new elements and a ton of fan-service elements.
Plus, if “This path you choose will test you. Many will fall, but those that stay the course will discover the darkness within,” which is laced throughout the trailer, isn’t the best description for the Souls series, I don’t know what is.
