Next month, Netflix is revisiting the ’80s in Stranger Things, a new original drama series. Given that Winona Ryder starred in several famous ’80s movies, it’s only fitting that she’s the headlining star of the new show.
Ryder is playing Joyce Byers, the mother of Will, a young boy who has disappeared under some very suspicious circumstances. In the newly released trailer, there’s a definite supernatural or alien vibe as Will is taken. Even locked doors couldn’t protect Will from whatever it is that grabbed him.
The trailer also plays up the E.T. nostalgia as a group of young boys encounter a mysterious girl who may hold the answers to Will’s disappearance. And in classic E.T. fashion, the girl is on the run from a shadowy agency that appears to have a nefarious agenda.
While the boys and their newfound friend may be the primary focus of the series, Rider’s character isn’t going to take a backseat. As you can see in the trailer, she’ll be attempting to get Chief Hopper (David Harbour) to take Will’s disappearance seriously. And if he won’t help her, she’ll investigate it herself!
Stranger Things also stars Matthew Modine as Dr. Brenner, Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler, and Millie Brown as the young girl known only as “Eleven.”
All eight episodes of Stranger Things season 1 are slated to premiere on July 15.
