Welcome to the premiere episode of Nerdist Sessions, our new monthly show in which our favorite musicians stop by the Nerdist studio to play acoustic versions of new material, covers, or whatever their rock n’ roll hearts desire. After a live performance, artists will sit down with me, your humble music editor, to talk shop a/k/a subject themselves to a battery of irreverent questions about their spirit animals, what song they would dance to for the rest of their lives, and which version of Frodo Baggins they think I most closely resemble (general consensus: Return Of The King Frodo, when he is weakening).
For our inaugural episode of Nerdist Sessions, we are elated to welcome the inimitable alt-rocker AC Newman of The New Pornographers. An easily identifiable voice and a staple within the indie rock community, Newman has been consistently churning out quality material since the 90s, and I definitely had a Wayne’s World “We’re not worthy!” moment when he visited. After an unplugged version of “Hi-Rise”, the penultimate, and my favorite, track from The New Pornographers’ new album Brill Bruisers, Newman, holding Mjölner, chatted with me about his red-headed doppelgängers, who would win a Canadian indie band Royal Rumble, and why Neko Case is probably the most dangerous member of the band.
We will see you guys again next month with a brand spankin’ new episode of Nerdist Sessions, featuring even more of the artists we love. We have got a lot of surprises in store, and we couldn’t be more excited.
Let us know what you think of our first episode and who you would like to see perform a session! Many thanks to Newman for stopping in for the debut of Nerdist Sessions — I hope you guys enjoy. Spoiler alert: you shall.
