Mansions On The Moon are an LA-via-Virginia Beach quartet whose resumé precedes them. Having worked with N.E.R.D. and Diplo on previous releases, the electropop outfit have developed a keen ear for the emotionalism that is often left by the wayside in 120+ BPM dance music. The call to action in the band’s new single, “Somewhere Else Tonight” is less let’s have a trashy, basic house party and more let’s corral all of our best friends in an outdoor venue with a shitty bluetooth speaker, play our five favorite songs on repeat, and make impossible plans for our future.
The music video features two unlikely heroes who follow the exhortation of a mysterious text message, find a rip in the space-time continuum, travel back 1000 years, and vanquish a giant animated apparition by becoming a friend-Megazord by doing the Gotenks dance. It sounds absurd because it absolutely is–according to the director, the video was inspired by a waking dream and Adult Swim. The progression of events intensifies as the song crescendos toward its choruses until our two protagonists emerge victorious from their own imaginary obstacles. Also, there may or may not have been a devil’s threesome by the end of this music video. I am just going to let the bearded friend’s thumbs up speak for itself.
If you found yourself grooving along to “Somewhere Else Tonight” (be honest, you were booty bumpin’) make sure to check these guys out on tour. Their self-titled debut album drops on October 22 and you can preorder the album here.
