  1. Rachael says:

I listened to this episode soon after it aired and his poignant outlook on life after cancer stopped me dead in my tracks. There was a moment that I was completely connected to the air I was breathing and the second I was living. I literally stopped getting ready for work and just stared at myself in the mirror. It was profound. It made me so grateful to just be alive and not in the “I just meditated” way but like really fucking aware of life. Later that day, we found out that my boyfriend’s mother’s cancer had returned. I don’t know the outcome but I do know that listening to your pod cast that morning and having that surreal moment meant something to me. I didn’t know who he was before the show but I will not forget him. Thanks for such a great show.

  2. deadorb1t says:

is there video footage of the cast?

  3. David says:

Amazing interview from a man with great perspective on life. I don’t have kids yet but I’d love to be the kind of father Michael Ironside seems to have had, and the kind of father he seems to be.

  4. David says:

Top drawer guest. Really pleasantly surprised by this guy. Always would’ve imagined him as a moody angry guy. Durh he was just acting! And f#ck cancer, the bastard.

  5. AL says:

I was thinking about Michael Ironside the other day. Great show.

  6. Kylie says:

He’s a leg’ (as we say in Oz….) a thoroughly decent awesome interesting human being

  7. RRR says:

So for the last year or so, when it’s been a male star that you respect, over a certain age, it feels like you’ve been trying to get closure over the death of your father with them. You’ve asked their advice and their wisdom but always, and likely subconsciously, in a life overview kind of way.
Now it’s not like you haven’t gotten good stuff out of them anyway (like with Cleese). But occasionally it veered into a little awkward in how much you wanted to get that deeper advice from them (like with Morgan Freeman). And in a way that it seemed like you were trying to make up for the fact that you never got that last set of lessons from your dad from how suddenly he was taken. I kept thinking, “at some point there’s going to be a guy who’s going to really answer these wisdom requests from Hardwick in a sincere and thoughtful way. And when he does…well I have no idea what’s going to happen.”
And then in walked Michael Ironside.
From the moment he did the bit where he said your father’s name to the part where you’re almost pleading for him to stay open to new things, it almost felt too personal to hear the catharsis you were getting.  Listening to you ask some old school father for advice and him just pouring forth in buckets in what I expect was the kind of language your dad used. And him having beaten cancer – twice – only made it more connecting. It was a chance to hear from a man who wanted you to know things who HAD been dying not that long ago. And who, coincidentally, you kinda grew up with. Who was in YOUR life this whole time. And who you never really knew. Because he’s NOT his on-screen persona.
The fact that you gave him your number and that you really seem like you’re going to hang out – you the guy who seemingly schedules everything short of bathroom breaks to meet demand – only drives it home. This was you finally getting the answers you wanted to hear…even if you were asking someone who wasn’t in the studio as well.

  8. Steve says:

Who is Michael Ironside? That’s Sam Fisher.

  9. Steve says:

Who is Michael Ironside? Thats Sam FIsher.

  10. Mark says:

Fantastic podcast guys. I haven’t commented in a while, but this podcast exemplifies how Chris has grown as an interviewer. He’s transcended the format to create interviews that are revelatory beyond my expectations. Thanks so much for creating them.

  11. Qrest Fourstar says:

While listening, I remembered an interview with him from Starlog. He used to have a car with a licnse plate that read “side-iron” and he’s get pulled over for it. And he’d always get off with a warning when the cop recognized him.

  12. Qrest Fourstar says:

Great podcast! Ironside is such great actor and gave probably the best interview. Loved it so much. What a cool guy.

  13. Carlos says:

My Dad worked in radio and after he passed one of the things I kept were his old reel to reel and radio shows. While he wasn’t talking to me directly it’s still nice to hear him when I need to.

  14. Nick says:

The story about his child and his father and turning off the light at night really struck home with me.

  15. Faivy says:

    Unexpectedly great podcast

  16. Joe says:

I used to not like Hardwick myself, mainly because he was everywhere and I thought he was fake. Then I read this interview with him and the way he talked about Star Wars made me realize that he really is true to himself. The Nerdist Network is my favorite podcast network and he created it!

  17. “I could drop the old bitch off a roof”That being said so deadpan by him was one of the greatest things I have ever heard…

  18. Crump's Brother says:

Hey Chris, we understand that you don’t want to block all people who post critical comments because they usually are fans with a valid point of view. But, you can block trolls like this with impunity and the full support of the Nerdist community.

    • English Dave says:

Absolutely. I know we’re supposed to just ignore the trolls and deny them what they crave but this arsehole’s personal attacks are making it somewhat unpleasant round here.

    • Grant Gunderson says:

Yay it looks like he got blocked!

  19. Lance says:

Considering, he probably got more booty in a month than you did in a lifetime…

  20. Yeah…Well the Jerk store called, and they are all out of you!

  21. Nate says:

“You die twice.  First when you physically die and the second is the last time your name is spoken.”  That scared the shit out of me.

  22. Grant Gunderson says:

“See you at the party Richter!” Ironside is a badass (how could you not be with that last name).
You should also look at getting CM Punk back on the podcast. Apparently there is a lot of brewhaha building up in the WWE involving Punk.

  23. craig says:

This was amazing, choked up a good few times! Who’d have thought one of my favorite movie psychos of all time is the sweetest guy! Thank you for this 🙂

  24. Corran says:

It’d be funny if Kyle cried in the background as loud and openly as he laughs.

  25. Wesley Marshall says:

Michael Ironside is a wonderful man! I worked crew on a short film he was in. He was super kind! I loved him as Darkseid!

  26. Shawn says:

What a great episode, and what a great guy!  Now I shall re-watch Extreme Prejudice this weekend.

  27. English Dave says:
