Nerdist Podcast: Jared Leto

Jared Leto comes on the podcast to talk about being nominated for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, his Thirty Seconds to Mars documentary, and the crazy financial system of musicians!

Watch the short documentary City of Angels!

  1. alfredo says:

host is a bit of a sycophant.

  2. Muthdra says:

Aaron, I think that’s alright for him to say that. Actually, I believe that it is healthy for people to believe that they can do amazing things; that’s a great step towards real success in doing what they want.

  3. Aaron says:

Did he really say, without the least bit of irony, that “I’m in the business of making dreams happen.”? Good lord. I can understand a bit of arrogance being that you’re such a successful musician, actor, and incredibly pretty man, but dial it down a fucking notch.

  4. Carlos Perez says:

Chris, to quote the beautiful Professor River Song: “spoilers!”

  5. Ash says:

The Internet is a hilarious place – Nerdist comments are no exception. Nothing brightens my day more than reading a bunch of bottom of the barrel, low class, IQ of a rock comments insulting people you know nothing about.

At the end of the day, Jared Leto has won an Oscar, has a band that is touring the world, and is way better looking than any of you could hope to be. But hey, you get to comment pathetically low comments about the dude. You’re living the life.

  6. Jeff Kelly says:

Jared Leto is an awesome vocalist and great actor.

The podcast broke my bullshit meter, though. It was a tough listen. Jared didn’t seem to connect to any of you guys and most of the things he said sounded like something out of a bad poetry book.

  7. OldGuy says:

Condescending and self indulgent, the trans community loathes you. With all the time you spent in Haiti, you should have been able to affect a better french accent.

  8. Rebecca says:

Man, a lot of haters on this one. I loved it. Side note, I could listen to Jared Leto eating for hours…

  9. sam says:

30stm saved your life? wow. Makes me want to end mine. Swings and roundabouts, I guess.

  10. Kata Luna says:

Ok that video posted by Bobby Rocket was NOT Jared hitting some random person on the head for no reason, like it appears to be. Some asshole was pulling on his arm, Jared was having trouble getting out of the persons grip, and hit the guy on the arm or the hand.
I don’t see him as being any more pretentious than most Hollywood people, though perhaps his goal of world peace, equality, and togetherness make people feel bad about themselves causing nasty rumors? or perhaps he’s actually mean, but I don’t know of any verified stories of his being righteous or cruel or pompous.
Also, you don’t need to insult 30stm just because you don’t like the music. I detest Taylor Swift and one direction and Justin Bieber and though I crack jokes here and there I don’t go to the comments section of one of their interviews just to say their music sucks and (in some cases) they are horrible people who should be exported to hell, however true I find it.
30stm saved my life, so sure I’m a little biased but seriously there’s a line between courtesy and a$$h0le-ry and you people just seem to cross it again and again and again! I see people like you everywhere, and it can’t just be trolls! There are too many!
What is so important to you about making cruel and untrue statements about good things? Please let me understand! If only I knew how your brains worked, maybe I could find a way to forgive the incessant stupid cruelty I find online. Please help me.
    sorry 4 the rant…

  11. Sarah says:

Ugh!!! This guy is a Dutch!! My friend is a huge fan of his band, seriously!! He acts like a jerk ppl keep buying his shit! I hate the fact that he wants to be everything and he sucks in everything. He should be a marketing teacher or something because he is good to sale all his junky shit! Like seriously? A dam documentary? Really!? Where his band was being use for 35 million dollars, he don’t show his real personality everything seem so fake guys he is an ACTOR!! Like come on, i went to check his documentary and guess what? I hate him even more!!!! I hope my friend and you all bunch on ridiculous and. Dum ppl realize how he is using u!!! He don’t give a fuck about you, all he wants from u is ur money!!!

  12. Linda Cawley says:

Please stop flying small planes, ala Vail-Grand Junction, Miami-St. Pete-an entire generation would be going down with you .

  13. Mandy says:

I almost didn’t listen to this because I made the mistake of reading the comments first. Chris was sincere, empathetic, and engaging. Settle down; there’s no need to go out of your way to be a dick just because you don’t like something.

  14. JasonG says:

Y’know Chris, not every guest you have has to be blown and told their movie is the most amazing thing ever. Not saying his movie isn’t good. But jesus it’s the same cock-sucking every time.

And…If you want people to check out a guests movie…maybe be careful with the fucking spoilers…Knowing NOTHING about this movie or the characters….I now know Jared’s dies…So thanks for that.

  15. Kirx says:

Great artist and wonderful man inside and out.

  16. Leonor says:

Unfortunately Leto comes out as an asshole, a douche and full of himself because he is not afraid to speak his mind and be himself in public. And that’s a rare thing in the show business this days. So people find it out of the norm and therefore odd and classify it as bad because nowadays everything that gets a bit away from the ordinary is considered bad.

Also on the internet you can find a lot of rumours and such. They show you two different sides and based on the proofs you have to choose what to believe in. Some choose to believe he is an asshole who hits fans, others choose to believe he is a good man who helps those who need.

  17. Neal Babcock says:

That was a good, informative interview. Chris, you might want to see a doctor about your lack of sleep, because you have a great brain and you should think about taking better care of it. You’ll also feel better in general after a few weeks of normal sleep. “After several days of sleep patterns similar to those followed by night workers – three days of night shifts with only four to five hours sleep in 24 hours – the mice lost 25% of the brain cells, in part of the brain stem.”

  18. Spatula Dave says:

This was a great episode, beyond a reasonable doubt.

  19. Nichole says:

I still don’t know how I feel about Jared Leto. He presents himself fairly well, but there are a lot of unsavory behind the scenes stories about him. I mean, he seems like a nice guy, but for whatever reason he does somewhat come off as being full of himself. maybe he’s just really confident, I don’t know. I don’t suppose we can really know unless we know him personally.

    Also, Bartholomew Cubbins?

  20. novaseason says:

Wanted to listen, but I can not stand listening to people smack their lips in my ear-buds because of them eating. It is maddening.

  21. Aline says:

@sam i don’t know much about this jared leto person but if you’re in the pit at a rock concert you expect it to hurt

  22. sam says:

@Leonor if you don’t want to be touched, you don’t jump into a crowd of people! Every other REAL rockstar is able to do it without hitting people at all, let alone as frequently as Leto does. There were at least 4 videos of him doing it over the years on youtube, which have mysteriously now been removed. Leto is just playing another part, and this time very badly. He wants to be seen as a Kurt Cobain type, but is coming off more as a bad copy of that douche Axel Rose.

Also, for the record, if he made contact with the person or not, the intent was to viciously harm in retaliation, not protect himself. Don’t make excuses for him.

  23. Bobby G. says:

Every time I see Jarred I think, is that Jennifer Connelly without makeup.

  24. BZ says:

Bobby Rocket (& other haters): Who knows how u would act if everywhere you go, people tell you ur beautiful, talented, intelligent, etc. or if someone inappropriately touched u while ur singing. Or if someone had a camera on you for every mistake you make. He seems pretty down to earth. Jared is not an actor that’s afraid to criticize a director for standing in the corner smoking a joint instead of directing. He’s not perfect but I doubt u r either.

  25. Leonor says:

For those hating on Jared and saying he hits his fans.

You have no idea on that video if he actually hit the person. Plus when on stage and going around crowd surfing it’s dangerous for an artist and he had to protect himself. He got his nose, fingers, toes broken by greedy fans. So before criticising think for a bit. If you had a bunch of fans trying to grab you at all given moments how would you react?

Btw it’s not only teenagers who go to 30STM shows. A big part of the Echelon family are older than 18

  26. Newtman says:

It sounds like somebody sighs and snaps their fingers to somebody off mic at the 17:35 mark.

  27. Patricia says:

Jared is a rockstar I love him and a great humanitarian and all round down to earth guy so haters back off!

  28. Jennifer says:

Great interview! I am glad you brought up the Trans community reaction thing because I follow the person that you are talking about that was having a problem with it. I feel like what you said how it wasn’t really him that she had the problem with it was the situation. I was glad to hear his side since I felt that exactly what he said was probably how he was thinking and it turns out I was pretty spot on. I do hope even though he is not trans that this will help get more of the issue out in the open and like he said getting the conversation started. I feel he was very respectful and did what he could to bring justice to the roll.

I have met him as well and he was great. The whole band stayed long enough after the concert to be able to sign everyone in attendances cds. That’s not something bands do often and it took a few hours since it was a pretty big venue.

Thank you Chris for asking the question and getting Jared on at the right time. I would love to hear him on again and talk more about 20 seconds and maybe My so called life and more of his past if possible. I know your both busy though. :)

To those hating on him, may want to do better research about him. He is a person. I am sure their on bad days but from what I have seen he is really great to his fans. He does a lot for his fan base.

  29. Aline says:

very cool interview! i really liked jared leto’s oscar acceptance speech and it got me interested in him, so thanks for having him on! he comes across as very self aware and i find that refreshing, also seems like he’s got a healthy approach to fame and life in general. some of the comments here are really surprising me painting him as such an unpleasant person, i remember him coming up on “nicest celebrity encounters” threads on reddit. i guess everyone can have a bad day every once in a while.

  30. Mariamne says:

    It’s not working for me.

  31. Nixon says:

@Bobby Rocket: Just for your information, Jared hit a guy, while he was singing in the crowd, because that guy grapped his balls and he was also hitting him very soft . I´ve met Jared at a meet and greet and he is a very nice and friendly person, so stop thinking you know Jared, because you´ve heard some lies and rumors on the internet :)

  32. Shannon says:

When and where will be the Live @ Midnight taping?

  33. Frank Pseudonym says:

    download failed – no file

  34. Bobby Rocket says:

@ColinJ so I’m finding out. The multiple videos of him hitting people (I’m guessing teenage girls. I mean, who else goes to a 30 seconds to Mars shows?) like this one are disgusting. He could be the next Marlon Brando for all I care. Such contempt and violence against people should not be tolerated. If Hardwick had spoken to his pal James Gunn about Leto beforehand, I’m willing to bet he would have never booked him on the show.

  35. ColinJ says:

@Bobby Rocket: I’ve never heard a good story about Jared Leto as a person, especially when he’s in ‘rock star’ mode and he wafts around the place with his truly terrible mall-rock band and thinks he’s David Bowie.

He is a terrific actor, though. I will give him that.

  36. Bobby Rocket says:

Jared Leto? The guy who hits fans in the crowd at his shows (youtube it), attacked Elijah Wood because he said his leto’s band was awful in an interview (google it), the guy director James Gunn said was ” the biggest fu*king asseh*le in hollywood. fuck that guy” when somebody brought him up on his facebook page? And that’s just the some of the confirmed truths about this guy. Why are people as cool as Nerdist associating themselves with and promoting him?. He really isn’t a very nice person.

  37. Dave says:

Totally, why can’t they just let a trans* woman play a trans* character.

  38. Debit says:

dude did an awful job representing the trans community.

  39. Mark says:

@ Jenn, Seconded for the Nerdist boys coming to Calgary!!

  40. spacie says:

I have crushed on this beautiful man since My So Called Life/ How to Make an American Quilt but have never really listened to him speak at length. I was praying for just “not douche” and was pleasantly surprised to hear a good natured and thoughtful artist!

  41. ryan says:

    Wont download

  42. John says:

Ugh. I used to like Jared Leto…but after “meeting” him, not so much anymore. The guy sounded like the most pretentious asshole on stage and didn’t acknowledge his fans in any way while signing CDs after the show. It was a sour experience.

  43. CodyH says:

It’s like he’s staring into your soul in the picture used.

  44. So what’s up on this file not existing?

  45. Robin says:

Great interview & a really interesting conversation. I like your conversational interview style. THANK YOU for not asking about Jared’s f`ing hair, which is fantastic, but he is so much more interesting than his ombre hair.
    BTW, love The Talking Dead.

  46. Fred Kiesche says:

I keep getting a “Failed—No File” when trying to download.

  47. fantas says:

Wow, Hardwick is always kiss-assey but this takes the cake. It’ Jared Leto. Relax, Chris. He’s your age and all, but take it down a notch.

  48. Jenn says:

Completely unrelated to the awesomeness of Jared Leto. Are any Nerdists planning a trip to Calgary for the expo this year? That would be awesome. Still a few months till spring, (actual spring not cold brown muck season) some nerdist shows would GREATLY help shake off the winter blues. =)

  49. GeekendorX says:

City of Angels should win an Oscar. I can’t watch that short without crying. AMAZING work from someone that truly loves Hollywood Blvd. Thank you JARED LETO and COREY FELDMAN! From your pal at http://www.GeekendorX.TV
