Nerdist Podcast: Chvrches

Lauren Mayberry, singer of Chvrches, takes a detour on their tour to talk to Chris! She talks about being from Scotland, transitioning from playing alt-rock to dance music, and meeting musical idols. They also talk about the importance of making music that they like instead of trying to please everyone else, and include a live song from their show in L.A.!

  1. One of our absolute favorite interviews with Lauren. Hope you have her on again Chris for the next Chvrches tour.

  2. s says:

36min “I’m always interested to hear how dating is when you’re in a band all the time. Is that impossible?” Haha Chris, so smooth.

  3. greexican says:

This particular podcast made me LOVE Chvrches…LOVE.  I liked them before, but, unlike what I heard the concern to possibly be discussed within the podcast, the human and humorous side of Lauren exposed on this took them to a new level for me.  One of the best performances I’ve ever seen has been Neko Case and largely it is due to her stage banter between songs.  Her songs are heavy, lyrics powerful and sometimes painful, but she is a flat out riot between songs.  The jokes and levity she comes by naturally show a different side to her and her music which take it all to a much more connectable level…this podcast did just that for me and Chvrches.  I have got to see them live now.  Thanks Chris…love the show, love the burritos.

  4. Jennifer says:

Wow I love this chic.  I went to check out her music and it’s great.  She also toured with Depeche Mode which is awesome, unfortunately it wasn’t the one I saw on that tour.  However Bat for Lashes was on that one and if you like Chvrches I would check them out too.

Thanks Chris for giving me years of different stuff to check out. I have found podcasts, comedians and music I would have never heard of if it wasn’t for nerdist.

  5. r_melo says:

Does anyone know what’s the tedTalk Lauren talks about in the beginning of the podcast?

  6. Bernard says:

Chris- I wanted to thank you for introducing me and my wife to Chvrches!  Being children of the 80’s we totally loved their sound. My only regret was that we heard this podcast a month after they were in Orlando. I would have loved to have seen them.

  7. Nikki says:

Chris – your impression of Caine’s Alfred had me cracking up.
I have no idea Lauren was my age! I feel like I could totally be friends with her now after listening to this

  8. stoner chef says:

first off this has nothing to do with this pod cast but id love to hear an official unofficial  commentary for ” Willow” think about it Mr. Hardwick I’m sure its been a while sense you’ve seen it .

  9. Dj Spynz says:

One of my favorites. This was a fantastic podcast! Thanks Chris!

  10. MartyMcfry says:

Love the way she says “Star Trek reboots”

  11. El BROstachio says:

What a nerdy British rock singer <3

  12. Heather says:

How much do I love the term “Podcast Mother” for Chris Hardwick!? So fantastic and perfectly descriptive of his role at Nerdist.

  13. This podcast was such a delight. Didn’t know who Lauren was but what a funny, talented and charming person she is.

  14. Corran says:

“Thank for the new legs, Forge.”
    -Charles Xavier…Never

  15. Ray says:

Lauren is so crushable, I can’t even handle it.

  16. Chris C. says:

This was a great podcast. I always feel conflicted when the episode is a band feature. Most of the time the people are great, but I really don’t like the music they make. This was one of those, but still enjoyed the ep.

  17. James Smith says:

I had no idea who this person was before now.  Now I am slightly loving her.  You have given us a gift Hardwick.

  18. G_Zimmer says:

The part about the way that albums are sequenced was dead on. I personally, am rarely able to skip through The Bones of What You Believe. I just feel the need to listen to it as a whole, because it just feels like it was intended to be presented that way.

  19. Jalen Lee says:

A great, great podcast with the always amazing Lauren Mayberry. You gotta love it when different mediums collide and the product is just darling.

  20. TOM says:

    • Also so necessary cause I feel like music people get asked the same fucking questions over and over again “how excited are you to be playing at XXXX location?” or “Tell us the inspiration for *most popular track*” and from what little I know of Lauren she’s done a lot so I’m so excited to listen to this

  21. JRox says:

    She. Is. Adorable.
Oh and also very smart and talented.

  22. stanthemanchan says:

One sign of a GREAT podcast guest is when Chris is obviously trying to wrap things up and it just keeps going. Not to say that the ones where this doesn’t happen are bad, but all the ones where it does happen are awesome.

  23. Josh T. says:

Spock’s rocket boots were from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.  C’mon Hardwick!

    • chris hardwick says:

Yes, Matt Mira already scolded me so I threw a guitar and he got distracted and chased it. I was able to casually stroll away.

      • Love and Miraige says:

I imagine you must have learned to keep a little baggie of guitars in your pocket for just these kinds of situations.

  24. Dylan Davis says:

I love CHVRCHES.  Saw them live in Minneapolis twice, including their very first show at a smaller venue here..  Lauren has a great music showcase podcast called TYCI (part of the TYCI ‘collective run by women’) that she co-hosts with some other women (I think the co-hosts vary a bit from episode to episode).  Apologies if this was already mentioned in the episode, I am going to listen soon, but was just excited to see she was a guest on Nerdist and couldn’t help but comment before i listened..
