The wonderful Benedict Cumberbatch is on the Nerdist! He sits down with Chris and Matt to talk about traveling back and forth across the Atlantic and the time he was taken captive in Africa… and then they all get silly and make fart noises. Benedict also talks about his role of Alan Turing in The Imitation Game and the genius and tragedy of Turing’s life.

  1. Chloe Walker says:

Please get another interview with Benedict Cumberbatch on Doctor Strange.

  2. Carlos Perez says:

I am typing this with chopsticks in my mouth because Benedict Cumberbatch is so disarming that I seem to have misplaced mine. I hope they eventually come home.

  3. bpd says:

Wonderful interview. As far as Benedict Cumberbatch in a comedy goes, he was wonderful in John Finnemore’s Radio 4 show “Cabin Pressure”. His character is everything that Sherlock isn’t (which is almost directly commented on in the episode “Paris”).
I always appreciated that Cumberbatch stayed on through the end with a radio drama even as his career was exploding and he became an international star. Would love to see him and Finnemore work together again in the future.

  4. David says:

Benadryl Cucumber Patch! “He’s so f#ckin suave”

  5. mmaves says:

  6. Sporin says:

This was a GREAT interview! B.C. is so charming and funny. I, too, would love to see him do a few roles where he could be funny and light.

  7. I REALLY enjoyed that! Thank you!!! <3

  8. Nikki says:

I just started laughing so much when BC did the impression of an american telling him “I love you as Doctor Who”
I always feel slightly bad about how I view BC because I am just now getting over seeing past him as the creeper in Atonement!
But, again, it is so nice to hear when actors are genuinely grateful for their work. Can’t wait to see The Imitation Game.

  9. Jen says:

Thank you guys for making my week!!! I will say my favorite internet video of Benedict Cumberbatch has to be when he recited an RKelly song like hes reciting Shakespere on Kimmel!!!

  10. Tom says:

One of the smartest guests yet. He knows movies, music, other stars, and current culture.  He was humble and introspective. I loved his definite thoughts regarding Dr. Who and Sherlock.  He recognized his beginnings and his parents’ roles and support.
I listen while walking to and from work and I’m sure that others on the sidewalk thought that I was a bit crazy as I laughed aloud and smiled broadly.
He rivals John Lithgow for most intelligent guest.

  11. Cory says:

    Benedict Cumbersplat.

  12. Smartyfarty88 says:

I love this podcast and have been listening to it for a long time but, sometimes it unnerves me when Chris pushes the comedy thing on guests. Cumberbatch would be the last person in the world I would think to ask about his possible upcoming comedy career.  That bit seemed uncomfortable. Otherwise, another great listen!

    • Brie says:

Benedict has been doing comedy for a while and is quite open to it. Remember, he’s been working for over a decade prior to becoming well known. I’m sure he was more than happy to play along. Check out the cabin pressure radio show to get a good idea, if you’re interested.  He’s been in a few comedies and was well received in all of them. We tend to think of him as more serious now, though.

  13. Galaxytides says:

Such a lovely podcast. Benedict is a delight

  14. Maria @LaughtAndLived says:

Oh sweet jesus! This was a utter delight to listen to. Real and deep things mixed with swearing and fart jokes. So fucking brilliant. Thanks guys for this jem of a pod.

  15. Puja says:

My face hurts from all the idiotic giddy smiling while listening to it.

  16. Arabrabbra says:

OMG. Oh. My. Goodness. I could listen to him talk and talk and talk for hours. Best ENJOY YOUR BURRITO EVER. I hope he comes back for every movie, play, BBC show he ever does.

  17. Kylie says:

That was so f**king cool….I adore BC

  18. Jaco says:

Epic podcast and what a treat the outtro was. Thx Nerdist!

  19. Geoffrey says:

Chris seems to be really big on his guests being articulate. I can’t wait for his first inarticulate guest, it’ll be a massacre!

  20. Pete Parker says:

This is turning into the best week for podcasts, first Wil Wheaton and now Benedict Cumberbatch.

  21. Sarah says:

Bless you for posting this on my birthday

  22. This was fucking amazing! Thank you Chris for this wonderful hour of Cumberbatchy goodness. Again, you are the master at putting people at ease and not asking lame cookie cutter questions. Surprising that Matt didn’t nerd out over Star Trek.I love that he mentioned Patrick from Starter for 10! He was such a dweeb! Just a brilliant podcast!

  23. Sam says:

Well, this was a big bowl of fucking amazing. Two of my favourite worlds colliding right here. OT: I miss Bruce Gutter. When is he on again?

  24. Kayla says:

Thank you so much. He is one of my favorite artists, and it is so wonderful to hear about his work and how passionate he is about acting. The farts at the end just made my day!

  25. Geonerd says:

Oh my God…I have tears in my eyes from that ending (and many co-workers wondering why I am laughing  so hard (silently) that I am shaking). Chris, nothing like taking one of the most respected English thespians and having him end with fart jokes. This was a great podcast. The best thing about the Nerdist Podcasts are that you seem to relax the guests into really being themselves. You can usually tell if it is going to go well when part way through the guest starts swearing unconsciously (when the f-bombs are used as adjectives).

  26. lalabandypants says:

Jesus. This was wonderful. I just listened to the podcast twice in a row, ’twas so full of Cumberbatch goodness.
    BIG THANKS, Chris Hardwick!

  27. Shannon says:

OMG!! Chris Hardwick you are the best!  Benedict Cumberbatch just made my day so much better!

  28. Three Toes of Fury says:

Woo Hoo!   Sherlock Khan is enjoyin some nerdist burrito!
I cant believe all the Doctor Strange details!   As Doctor Strange will be new to a lot of movie goers,  there will be several cross over moments.   Benedict listed some of them…alleged spoilers below…..
*The main foe was foreshadowed in the post-credits-Guradians scene…yup…Doctor S will face Marvels greatest villain..Howard the Duck.
    * This film will be the last appearance of Robert Downey JR as Iron Man.   Rather than kill off Tony Stark,  the director plans to have him transition his Iron Man technology to a newer, younger actor to play the role going forward…they are finishing negotiations to sign Carrot Top to the role.
    *  In the backstory/origin story for the Doctor,  we’ll see that another Avenger played crossed paths with him during his childhood.    The scene will be him, aged 13,  performing a magic show for his school.   He will be on stage with a large spiderweb prop describing his next illusion.  He will call for his assistant Natalia…who will come on stage wearing a black widow costume.
*The movie will have some humor infused…for one scene they plan on having Doctor Strange cast a spell which turns Chris Angel and David Blane, permanently, into chickens.   Because…well..its a great idea.
    *  The movies theme will be “When Your Strange” by the Doors.   (ok..actually this is a good idea).
Peace .n. Elementary my dear Nerdists.

  29. Smn says:

Posting to se link  to kid video.

  30. Smn says:

    Posting to get link :)

  31. pbvS86 says:

I believe the clip of BTTF III they talk about isn’t anything untoward on the part of the child-actor… I think he was giving signals to Einstein (le dogg). Can anyone confirm?
