One of our pals from way back, Dana Dearmond–aka “The Internet’s Girlfriend”–is an adult film lady who also happens to be a HUGE gamer and comedy nerd. Not surprisingly we discuss games, comedy and Dana’s appearance in the upcoming “Star Trek: The Next Generation” porn parody [18 & older, please].

Wow, I am really late to this party. I doubt anyone is even going to read this comment, but I wanted to quickly add my two cents to the debate that PhilosopherKing started. It is unclear to me what he means by “dubious”, but it seems he has some moral objection to pornography, or to people who participate in the porn industry. There are a couple of observations I would like to make.

First, they have done studies that have shown that when people encounter other people who are perceived as “different” (in socio-economic status, race, culture, style of dress, values, life-style, etc.) the empathetic part of our brain tends to shut down. I think a lot of what passes as “moral” critique is really just the result of that part of our brain shutting down, which leads us to judge people we view as different more harshly than we judge people we view as “like us”. If someone adopts a life-style we do not understand we have a tendency to judge them as “dubious”. There is nothing, in my opinion, moral about that (“Judge not, lest ye be judged”).

I think there is probably only a single genuine moral imperative: be as compassionate as possible towards as many people as possible. All the rest seems to me to be nothing but the unsympathetic parts of our brain kicking in. That is why I think it would be good for anyone who has a negative reaction to “porn actresses” to listen to a podcast like this. It will give you a chance to see that porn actresses are human beings too. The brain is very plastic. We can alter how it functions, and we can alter the engrained judgments, and prejudices, that lead us to feel compassion for one group of people, but not for another. We should be trying to extend the group we feel compassion for as far as possible, and reduce that judgmental part as much as possible.

I do not doubt that many porn actresses are psychologically damaged, but so are most of us, and I think that most of what we do in our lives is an attempt to reintegrate and become healthy again. No one can predict what path that will take. Sometimes, to paraphrase William Blake, excess is the only path to wisdom. We should also not forget that even according to the Bible the sinner is closer to God than the self-righteous (see the story of the tax-collector and the pharisee).

April O’Neil is from the Ninja Turtles. “What is Traci Lords doing for nipples” gd funny. I don’t think to movie title poop game is funny. I don’t like poop. It is a turn off. I would think a gyno would not be into porn “Honey I just got home. Put that thing away. ” Traci Lords is a devil and should be shamed into a dark hole.

I enjoyed the podcast in the beginning, but then Dana fell into what so many guests (and hosts – not you guys) fall into: “Likeasitis”. By that I mean every other sentence contains, “and then she’s like… and then he’s like… so she’s like….” It became unbearable to listen to because once you pick up on it, you can’t stop hearing it!

But, as always, you three were excellent!

But wouldn’t you say that the realistic nature of the thing outweighs the concept of it? Life isn’t made out of concepts, it’s made out of events. Real events.

  7. Rebecca says:

I had no idea who this woman was from just her name, not a big porn fan is probably the reason. Anyway although as I said, not a fan of porn I thought I would give it a listen, glad I did. Although some of the images I now have in my head are a little disturbing, I found her to be an intelligent funny woman and to judge her on what or who she does is seems just unfair. While not adding the NextGen parody to my Amazon wish list I thought the subject was different from the usual and I’m glad I gave it a go.
