  1. trailofinklings says:

Oh man… as soon as Corolla started in on the originality bit, I started hating him. NOTHING IS ORIGINAL. EVERYTHING IS BASED ON SOMETHING. For instance, THE BIBLE. Lord of the Flies, East of Eden, Star Wars. It’s the bible.

Sorry Jesus, I stole your idea.

  2. Amanda says:

@Stephen, I’ve actually heard Jim Gaffigan do a similar bit on Mexican food: “What’s a burrito? It’s tortilla with cheese, meat and vegetables. What’s an enchilada? It’s tortilla with cheese, meat and vegetables.” I guess it’s difficult to come up with something completely new, but it seemed pretty ironic that he was ranting about having a pretty strict opinion on originality.

  3. rhzunam says:

@stephen- I really doubt Adam Carolla is familiar with Bill Hicks comedy. He doesn’t seem to be much of a comedy savant. I’m a huge comedy nerd and yet I never heard of the Hicks bit on Mexican food so I doubt Adam did plus it doesn’t sound like this very intricate comedy idea that wouldn’t have ocurred to anybody else unlike some of Hicks other works.

As for the person saying about Weird Al, yes he is a talented musician but his works is on parodies and that is the prasie he gets, if he did so for the music itself, he wouldn’t get it since it’s 100% samples.

  4. Listen to this says:

Great podcast, Chris gets the best out of Adam, hilarious and insightful. Do not judge Adam on preconceived notions, after all he is a car/carpentry nerd at heart.

  5. Captain Complainet says:

This one was boring and just felt like it was an advertisement to sell tickets. You killed it with the Lindelof podcast though. I’m a big fan of the show and appreciate the work you put into it.

  6. Joyce J says:

Had to turn this one off mid-rant, but it will not discourage me from downloading the next offering. If this is anyone’s first listening – give it another chance!!! It’s well worth it.

Keep up the good work Chris. We won’t all like them all, and luckily I have this button on my ipod that stops the sounds reaching my “ear holes”.

  7. Stephen says:

First off, I love the show. I started listening at the Kevin Smith ep and have listened to old and new eps concurrently since then.

That being said …. I’m not really a fan of Adam Carolla, and today’s show didn’t help that. He shouldn’t slam people sampling music and then rip off another comics bit (at 7:30, he starts talking about the Mexican food… oddly similar to a bit by Bill Hicks about “how would you like your beans and flour arranged?”). I may just be biased as a big Bill Hicks fan, but if he didn’t rip it off completely then he certainly sampled it.

Other than that…. love the show, keep it nerdy.

  8. DotC says:

    Hey Chris,
    A) your laugh when you cant help it is wicked sexy.
    2) I agree that Adam is sometimes a better guest but that goes for a lot of podcasters. Except NL, who always sucks.
iii) So, you will not be anywhere near LA when my sister and I planned on going to see a comedy show (end of May, early June). Can you suggest a good nerd/alt comedy show we could come see? Patton was just here (AZ) and Doug was too. Please let me know.

  9. G says:

Adam is such a jackass. He’s usually on better behavior as a podcast guest (and often quite funny), but here we get the same butthurt drivel that dominates his own show. I always enjoyed him on Loveline, but lately he’s become Captain Poopypants.

  10. Fortran says:

I just listened to this podcast and became fascinated with the “Faces International” magazine (of headshots, &c.) that Chris mentions. Unfortunately, the Internet doesn’t seem to like that name. Not even eBay has one of these for sale. Does anyone know if that is the right name for this magazine?

  11. Mandy says:

It was great to hear my two faves on this podcast. Saw Carolla in Minneapolis and will be seeing Chris this week in Minneapolis.

  12. Mike P says:

No one should do vampire stuff anymore because that is “stealing someone elses art”, but a direct copy of the Rifftrax concept is cool?
I am sort of amazed that Adam didn’t acknowledge the contradiction there, not even a little bit.

Oh well, I guess a lot of folks like the negative rant type show (Corolla’s). To each their own.

I’m glad the Nerdist podcast tries to stay on the positive side of things (overall).

  13. Tamsies says:

Chris, you bring the best out of Adam. Thank you. It was very entertaining. I think it would be so fun to listen to you, Jonah, and Matt providing commentary on Back to the Future or something like that. Don’t sell yourself short.

  14. Nathaniel H. says:

Ooh, I like [email protected]’s idea! Give a portion to charity (maybe of the special guest’s choosing when you have one?) on each commentary, and you have instant credibility! Heck, I’d even consider doing 50% charity, 50% Nerdist Industries, since it’d be money you otherwise wouldn’t have in the first place. But, of course, that’s up to you. I’d still slap down two or three bucks for commentaries.

  15. Another great episode!

Let me jump on the band wagon of people encouraging you to take up Adam’s idea for commentary podcasts. I would pluck down a buck or two to hear you, Matt and Jonah provide some commentary.

Think it would be awesome if you got comedians like Doug Benson to guest. But alsol if you had non-comedian personalities like Olivia Munn do one, that would be fun too. Or imagine doing Serenity with Fillion or ST:THG with Wheaton. Some stars might think it is self-serving etc, but you could give portion of those episodes proceeds toward charity. I am sure people would pay a little extra for a good combination like Fillion/Serenity.

  16. chris says:

    Great episode. Loved it.

Don’t get the Carolla hate for being ‘homophobic’. I listen to Babble On and he joked about things without being hateful. He’s a comedian.

  17. Huell Howser says:

    Carolla’s divisive!

  18. Beth Kaelin says:

I thought the Adam Carolla Returns Again podcast was really good, but I missed Matt and Jonah.

  19. nater says:

There is a movie made from sampling other movies.
It is “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid” with Steve Matin.
    Beastie Boys always a favorite.

  20. Al says:

Interesting discussion with Carolla, particularly the bit about his outlooks on business and comedy. I’m a bit surprised that he is so transparent with his view of comedy as a business rather than art, but then again I grew up in the 80s, when NWA monetized their credibility. Maybe it’s the older demographic, or a less credulous audience, or whatever, but media consumers today don’t appear to demand business-naive artists.

  21. CNate says:

I am still protesting Carolla for his homophobic crap he spews. His appearance on Hollywood Babble-On is a perfect example. What’s sad is he doesn’t even see what he is saying as being childish and offensive.
He says he is speaking for straight men but I’ll be damned if you represent me Adam.
As a huge fan of Nerdist, this will be the first episode I skip completely.

  22. Dean says:

I found it kind of ironic that in Carolla’s rant about sampling he uses a track that samples Led Zeppelin as an example, when that band are kind of infamous for allegedly stealing parts of songs by other artists.

  23. WOOT Bonus Podcast!!
This was an amazing bonus Podcast, Carolla is always so funny! BTW: I personally like Chad Lowe better than Rob Lowe ♥ ☺ ☻
My favorite part of the Podcast had to be when Chris snorted while laughing, I do that too! 😉

  24. Aoife says:

Maybe I’m just missing something because I’m not from the US but I can’t stand Adam Carolla, I don’t see his appeal at all, didn’t enjoy the ep, sorry Chris :/ I do appreciate getting three eps this week though!

(BTW Nerdist is 119th in comedy podcasts on iTunes Ireland, I might be your only listener :P)

  25. Lee says:

@ Jose Maldonado – Says the singer in a cover band about musicianship and originality. JESUS CHRIST. What a beautiful combination: ignorance and arrogance.

  26. Iowa Mike says:

I follow two or three podcasts religiously, and both Chris and Adam’s are included. Two very different takes on comedy, but work extremely well together. Loved every minute of this podcast, thanks Chris!

  27. Flatulator says:

Great show. I’m not sure it makes sense to compare sampling to the vampire genre, but that’s why Adam is Adam – he just loudly opinion barfs over everything. Great chemistry between you two.

  28. courtney z says:

I LOVE ADAM CAROLLA!!! Great job!

  29. Alex says:

Why and Because were in the outfield Chris. The only player not named was the right fielder. Abbott and Costello were my intro to comedy, which is unusual since I am only 25.

@Jose Maldonado: The fake trailers that keep popping up on YouTube like The Batman Complex are a better comparison between film sampling and music sampling. Good sampling should take bits to create something new and unique while still having some recognizable aspect.

Would you call Weird Al a talentless musician? He’s made his career off of reproducing someone else’s songs in his own amusing way. And he is brilliant. So there is obviously some kind of art to using things other people have created.

  30. Willis says:

I’d watch Black Dynamite again with some nerdist commentary

  31. Wesley Marshall says:

@Chad H I agree with the King of Free Comedy Podcasts idea!! That would be so fucking amazing.

  32. Chad H says:

I think the commentary for Who episodes is an awesome idea.

Also the kings of Free Comedy Podcast should do a special. I don’t think you’ll get Pardo which is why I included the “free” part. 😀

  33. Wesley Marshall says:

@Matt Holy shit they should totally do that. Craig and Chris talking about who would be amazing. Seriously Chris do that and if not with Ferguson do that with Matt and Jonah. That is all.

  34. Ward says:

Like the idea of doing a commentary, but since you are worried since RiffTrax already does it.

Why don’t you do Doctor Who episodes!

  35. Oscar says:

I’ve been listening to both of your podcasts since their beginnings. Awesome how good friends you are, yet you have different interests outside of comedy.

  36. Zaffos says:

Loved the podcast, cept for Carrolla ranting about not taking other people’s ideas early on, speaking about music and stuff, but then at the end talks about doing the same thing Riff Trax is doing……not to mention the guys at riff trax are the same from mst3k. Anyone else think it was slightly hypocritical?

  37. Magnoliafan says:

Love the podcast but Adam Carrolla can eat a dick. I’m so sick of this guy.

  38. Matt says:

Oh yeah…. and Chris and Craig Ferguson doing commentary itunes tracks for Doctor Who episodes… we all have thought it. Why haven’t you Chris and Craig?

  39. Matt says:

I just saw a commercial that gave me food for thought. The female Rob Lowe might be Jane Seymour?

  40. @Oxford Okay, so what if someone made a movie where 80% of the movie was clips of the movie “Scarface”? Not a re-make, but used actual footage of the Scarface movie with Al Pacino. Would that be “original”, “brilliant”, or just lazy movie-making?

For me, music isn’t just about a song but musicianship. Watching someone sample a beat, riff, or melody doesn’t impress me. Watching a guy like Prince (sorry Adam), the Foo Fighters, or even No Doubt actually playing instruments, burning calories with ORIGINAL material, now THAT’S impressive.

  41. Pat says:

Great listen, love when you and Adam do each others podcasts! And I can only dream of the day when we get 5 Nerdists a week. A man can hope, right?

  42. Oxford says:

I love the podcast, but I need to take the contrarian stand here and say that there is an inherent artistry involved when it comes to sampling in hip hop production. Taking a sonically interesting bit of an existing song, expanding on it and creating a new beat with it requires a level of education and sensitivity that deserves more credit. That is not to say that bad sampling isn’t rampant, but criticizing work exclusively on the basis that something similar already exists is a little unfair.

So while both of your criticisms with regards to contemporary culture being cyclical and doubling back on itself does ring true, this doesn’t necessarily mean that uninteresting work doesn’t come out of that process and absolute originality should not be the main/only criteria with which to judge the validity of a work.

Of course I might just be reading too much into it and if so, I apologize for wasting your time. But since you’ve already read this far, remember that thing from a few episodes back about how it feels good when you see a good person succeeding? I don’t know if being the #1 comedy podcast on iTunes constitutes success but you seem like a decent dude Chris Hardwick and thus I am feels good for you; that thing about giving up Karen Gillan and Steven Moffat because they seemed tired was especially cool, at least to me.

Finally, I just wanted you to know that you have a very tiny following here in Singapore as well.

  43. Lee says:

It’s free and it’s extra. I can’t really complain. Chris was great as always.

    Adam was Adam. As always.

  44. Annecoultersadamsapple says:

Was Adam litteraly beating his chest during this interview or is it just alluded to in his need to talk about porn in every interview, the way he has to name the make of every car (he knew the name of the car in Griswold family vacation but not the name Griswold family vacation?) and calling himself “Ace” unironically.

Does he write the Carls Jr Commercials?

P.s. The way Chris has ragged on people who complain on the internet I felt shame throughout this entire rant. I swear I have a life.

  45. Dom A. says:

Hahaha. Ace is pursing his lips MUCH MORE than Hardwick.

  46. Josip Vujcic says:

Did I write ‘Weeds’? Sorry – I meant ‘Californication’… Dam Showtime

  47. Josip Vujcic says:

When I saw Kathleen Turner on ‘Weeds’ I thought it was Shatner in drag… Why God? By the way, please pitch the Paul Giamatti idea to James Adomian. I’d watch that

  48. Dario says:

I always love it when Chris and Adam get into deep conversation 😀

    Good Times

  49. Chad H says:

You’re going to spoil us with the three a week nerdists. 😀
