I remember it was #1: Tsunami hits Japan #2: Kristen Stewart and the Kristen Stewart story was “Kristen Stewart unharmed by tsunami” like “well thank God no actual human beings were affected by this disaster”. Blair Slavin says: April 11, 2011 at 10:19 am Who is Kevin???? Sorry… brain fart on my part. Sometimes dyslexic on names and such. I meant you Chris on the comment on the book and how long your publisher is going to take to get your book out. But if you wish to change your name to Kevin, that would be great. But then, another brain fart would occur and I would probably call you Al (thats a musical reference… of which I am proud of only because I know so few of them). smartbunny says: April 7, 2011 at 6:57 pm I suppose I have only heard trans people say it. If someone says “That’s a tranny” or “You look like a tranny” w/o really being part of the community I can see where it would come off as lumping everyone together as a wacky Jerry Springer-style transvestite or something. Lindsey says: April 7, 2011 at 1:53 pm smartbunny; oh I don’t think it was meant with any maliciousness or anything. My experience has been the exact opposed of yours I guess. I’m fairly involved in the LBGTQI rights movement/community and the only time I’ve seen it considered as a non offensive word is when a trans person uses it. Similar to the N-word or fag in that respect I guess. I know this isn’t an isolated opinion considering how recently Glee received a lot of flak from a ton of people and advocacy groups for using the word tranny to refer to a trans person on their show. Sarah the Librarian says: April 7, 2011 at 12:31 pm Love the podcast! It makes me smile while driving to work in the mornings. The quemment from the soldier heading overseas made me think of a not-for-profit group I volunteer with: BooksForSoldiers.com They send ‘care packages for the mind’ (i.e. books) to deployed soldiers all over the world. If my fellow book nerds want to donate, BFS would be happy for money to defray postage costs! smartbunny says: April 7, 2011 at 12:14 pm Lindsey: I have many trans friends (including an ex-bf who had SRS) and I’ve never heard that term was offensive. This is why I asked. If I don’t know I am sure the Nerdist guys don’t know either. Jesse says: April 7, 2011 at 9:52 am Did anyone else momentarily see the name on this episode as “SILLY TITTIES” at first? No? Just me? Oh… okay. Carry on. Maxwell says: April 7, 2011 at 12:06 am What’s the limitations of being PC on a PC? Lindsey says: April 6, 2011 at 6:36 pm the word trany is a slur that is used against trans individuals. Hearing offensive and derogatory hate speech like that used as if it’s no big just is not ok. smartbunny says: April 6, 2011 at 6:12 pm Lindsey; why? Lindsey says: April 6, 2011 at 12:38 pm I have to say hearing one of my favorite podcast casually referring to a trans person as “trany” so casually really ruined this episode for me. Jon Pinto says: April 6, 2011 at 6:47 am I have a very distinct honor in saying that I found the Nerdist podcast due to the fact that you found me first. Back on Sept. 15, 2010, Kyle reposted a Doctor Who picture I painted (Weeping Angel, Pinto Style) and traffic to my website jumped TREMENDOUSLY for the month of September! To be honest, I didn’t notice the increased traffic because I am a lazy slob and didn’t look at the stats on my blog, I found that out later but I just thought you guys might like to know and feel good about yourselves. I actually found that you had posted my work when I did a periodic search for myself. Sounds pompous, I am aware, but I found the need after I came across a dealer at the Star Wars Celebration Convention selling prints a different Doctor Who poster I drew for $20 each and without my knowledge or consent. I was really irritated since I have never made money drawing what I wanted to draw and in my own style. My whole career to date has been working “on model” with licensed characters. Anyway, since catching one thief and writing about it, I have had several people contact me about other vendors selling the same print at various conventions nationwide. I caught a second thief personally this past weekend at Mega Con in Orlando (where I live). To make matters worse, the print they are selling was a version I posted before I made corrections to the piece! Well, that was a really long ramble and I just wanted to say that I always look forward to your show and am thrilled that you make so many since I always listen when I am up walking at 5:30 in the morning and then on my drive to the office after dropping my son off at school. Orlando radio sucks and you guys make me laugh and talk about things I love. You even mentioned Crowded House!! My all time favorite band. You guys rock! Now get back to work so I have more things to listen to. Dan says: April 5, 2011 at 7:06 pm This episode was great except it introduced me to the show Survivors. Even though you said it left with a cliff hanger and those usually piss me off I had to give it a go. Over the past 3 days I have watched the entire series and am now pissed off with the cliff hanger. Anyways love the podcast. Nevidge says: April 5, 2011 at 3:04 pm I must be listening to this podcast too much. My parents suggested we start a compost heap and were outlining the different processes they could used and I just shout out; “NOODLE STORY!!” P.S. Love the show… podcast… this thing you do. smartbunny says: April 5, 2011 at 9:55 am I thought Jonah was talking about “rendering” in video editing. Abby says: April 5, 2011 at 7:48 am I am in love the the quements song! It reminds me of a song I made up with some of my friends about the wonderfullness of sitting on the davenport! Ross says: April 5, 2011 at 5:21 am Great fun, guys. It’ll probably never come up for you again, but “rendering” is melting out the fat(so, while you might be rendering as a byproduct of making grill marks, they’re two different processes). Now, I gotta go see when they’re rerunning the Friday Web Soup. Missed it when it aired, dagnabbit. Maxwell says: April 4, 2011 at 11:26 pm I adore the podcasts and love the odd little mentions. I want to say how excited I am that people are bringing up and spreading The Mountain Goats around, hopefully this hits as many people as Morel Orel did. Julia says: April 4, 2011 at 6:04 pm Had to say that twice because it’s so important. Julia says: April 4, 2011 at 6:02 pm Matt, I agree with Blair about losing weight before back surgery. I lost 20 lbs a few years ago and my recurring neck/back problems became a once or twice a year thing. If you work on your core it will help your back as well. Yoga, pilates, situps are all good for this. My local YMCA had a great abs boot camp. Also, I laughed and laughed at the quement from a listener asking if Jonah and Chris were bullying you into standup. I always wondered that too! Glad to hear it’s something that you really want to do and that they’re not just being bossy. Also, I have to say I like that you have a non-entertainment industry job – I think you bring a different perspective to the group. Geoff says: April 4, 2011 at 5:13 pm Also, I love the podcast and I’m going back to awaiting the government shutdown here in DC (which, thankfully, will not directly affect me). Geoff says: April 4, 2011 at 4:58 pm Gentelmen, A few things: 1. Deadwood was probably one of the best shows on TV, they could have done so much more with the show after the third season. I believe the real Seth Bullock even knew Teddy Roosevelt. In any case here’s a great website counting the number of fuck’s per minute in the entire series: http://thewvsr.com/deadwood.htm 2.David Milch’s new HBO show is called “Luck” and has Dennis Farina, Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte in it. 3. The GEICO thing you mentioned, the announcer got drunk and called Freedomworks and left a message, got fired and spawned this video: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/right-now/2010/05/the_case_against_drunk-dialing.html?wprss=right-now David Robins says: April 4, 2011 at 4:31 pm Hello. Been listening to past episodes of the podcast since C2E2 and love it!! How can I talk to Chris about the possibility of a Live Nerdist Podcast at a gaming convention in Milwaukee, WI this coming January? Please let me know. Thanks!! Handy J says: April 4, 2011 at 12:38 pm Wow Jonah you should save scintillating stories like that lolcat anecdote for your autobiography. smartbunny says: April 4, 2011 at 12:21 pm @Ben K : NO JOKE about Carnivale! That was a major bummer. Freelance Spy says: April 4, 2011 at 10:04 am I think you’re right there is a similar metaphorical relationship between gay guys and baseball (i.e. pitcher and catcher) and gay wizards and Quiddich. I think they’d be called Beaters and Quafflers. Also the Seeker is always chasing after the Golden Snitch. There’s got to be something in that.
