Nerdist Podcast #35: JONATHAN COULTON

Jonathan Coulton is an hilarious musical nerd icon. If you don’t know who he is I am surprised, but this is a good place to meet him. We chat about touring, the crafting of nerdy songs, and leaving safe but boring jobs to pursue unsafe but unboring jobs. PLUS JoCo plays a few songs, one of which is BRAND FRIGGIN NEW.

Listen! Now! Really!

  6. Josh from Europe says:

    (((d(–__–)b))) great one.

Shitty jokes, how about “BLACK HAWK DOWN”

  7. Gregg in ATX says:

I started listening to the podcast at #38 and then started at #1 to catch up while listening to the newer ones, I skipped the Apple new product podcast because I had no interest in it, almost skipped this one, but after having a lot of laughs from other podcasts, I figured I would try it out. Glad I did, this was one of the best, very funny, one of the few where I had to push pause and laugh so I wouldn’t miss the next joke. I <3 Jonathan Coulton now. Thanks Chris.

  8. tina says:

A little late BUT my fav Nerdist podcast so far 😀 did anyone else get a Smoking Popes vibe from JoCo’s last song?

  9. Alex Miller says:

I think I might have wet my pants at Bob Youtube.

  10. Carl says:

First off, I wanna say that this podcast is awesome and you get the most
AMAZING(*hint*hint*), guests ever! Do you think you could ever get Zachary Levi or Joshua Gomez to do your podcast? Their from the TV series Chuck! Sorry for bothering you with this but I just really want them to be on the show!

  11. Scott says:

As an English Montrealer, I’m sorry to hear that Chris and Jonathan had such a poopy time in my city. :( We don’t all hate everybody!

But once again, hilarious episode of the podcast with too many laugh out loud moments to count, especially Super Mario the Ventriloquist.

  12. Jet says:

    21 Grams

  13. Jet says:

I have a doorless shower. You stand outside the bathtub, the showerhead is over the sink. The toilet is bout 3 ft away. The whole room gets soaked.

You guys can come use it any time. I live in Japan.

My favorite one so far! So glad that JoCo sang “Code Monkey,” especially when I think about that song every time I sit down to program. The entire thing was hilarious, though, especially the ventriloquism tangent.

  17. Dan says:

I can’t figure out what he is saying in the last song. I understand everything except:

“Because I also have ******* at home, I’m ******* at home”

    Anyone else have this issue?

  18. Matt says:

Great show, loved it. This podcast got me into Dr. Who, but now I need to point out a video I found called Abducted by Daleks. It is a sexploitation video and completely off label, of course. I about Dumbo Dropped my pants when I saw it.

  19. Alex says:

“Wrath of Khan” for the block

  20. gladly says:

That was one of the silliest and most enjoyable things I’ve listened to in some time–adorable and talented nerds making each other giggle. Such a great hour, thanks!

(pandora’s lunchbox, I think you’ve won this game with Black Snake Moan. Good lord.)

  21. Stef says:

Awesome podcast! I love JoCo! It makes me happy inside to see him wearing those welding goggles, as I have the same pair, except I steampunked them. Yes. I’m one of Jonathan Coulton’s steampunk fans. And thanks for the new game to play with my roommates!

  22. Phil M says:

Movie titles that sound like you’re taking a crap – BEST GAME EVER. (The Godfather.) I introduced it to my co-workers and we just spent the last 45 minutes laughing our butts off. And thank you for introducing me to Jonathan Coulton. I loved the Code Monkey song, and will definitely be checking out his music.

  27. Maddy says:

I love JoCo, but daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnng that last song was depressing. I really wasn’t expecting that.

    Black Snake Moan
    I Am Legend

  30. SK says:

I’m the slightest bit embarrassed about how hard I laughed at the Movie Titles That Sound Like Shitting bits. Seriously, tears still drying on my cheeks. This has got to be one of the funniest episodes lately…thank God I wasn’t listening in public.

    Jonathan Coulton is amazing.

  31. Annecoultersadamsapple says:

    The Departed.

  32. This is a great podcast. JoCo is awesome!

  33. Tonya says:

Legends of the Fall! Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

  34. ZakR says:

I love it! Although I never noticed before how similar JoCo’s voice was to that of John Hodgeman. (and I detected undercurrents of the Two Johns from TMBG). So it’s either the “John” accent, or a new Brooklyn accent, I guess? Anyway. Great interview, and I loved hearing the music (though I’m still trying to figure out the meaning behind the last song…?).

  35. pandoras lunchbox says:

The Mario ventriloquist talk was some of the most hilarious stuff I’ve ever heard. “Luigi! How you eat-a the mushroom and a-talk!?”

  36. McFeely says:

A+++++++ Quick delivery, Would listen to again.

  37. Sara says:

I still have my dad’s TRS-80 2, along with a floppy drive the size of a toaster. It no longer turns on, but I keep it around in the hopes that a battery replacement or simple soldering job will restore my ability to play Downland.

  38. luke says:

holy shit the mario tear had me on the floor for minutes! the funniest thing on nerdist since white elderrly raciest nerds on the alison brie episode!

  39. Dan Jammin' says:

@Jeff: But how do you feel about the interview?

(Also, the music delivered. And I quit actively working. So I apologize for the previous whining.)

  40. My favorite interviewer interviewing my favorite interviewy. Intervawesome.

  41. Dan Jammin' says:

Ugh, working on programming a stupid excel macro while listening to people talking about programming is not providing the escapism I was looking for. But from what I read there’s music coming up. Comooon podcast. Music me!

  42. Summer says:

    Best podcast ever.

  43. Ryan says:

I was loving this podcast until the last song hit way to close to home. I got depressed but was quickly saved by more poop jokes.

  44. Stacy says:

I literally squealed out loud when I saw Coulton’s name. BTW, the link goes to the wrong URL. You have an extra h.

  45. Thisisme says:

I’ve heard the ‘Future Soon’ song some where before and I can’t remember where… anyone? I hate when this happens : (

  46. Gabrielle says:

The extent of my programming the C-64 was printing lines and lines of multicolored hearts…. and inserting naughty and mischievous words and phrases into the code of text adventure games (I was 8 or 9).

I was considering pulling together a fun meetup in Fort Lauderdale, FL prior to the December JoCo cruise. Something nice for the whole family. Would need ideas/assistance in arranging. Any interest?

  47. Rosalind says:

JoCo is awesome, right! I actually saw the premiere of this song and the five other new ones in Northampton Mass in July, and then he played this one and four others of six new ones at PAX, just missing Today With Your Wife (which is nice, but very slow). I’m already excited for the new album, and it hasn’t even been recorded yet!

    Girls Are Geeks

  48. Erin says:

Also I love that pic of Mr. Coulton. I’m great with a soldering iron..

  49. Erin says:

    TESLA! Gosh. Not Edison

  50. Jade says:

This was SO GREAT! Really fun, and so sad that it had to end so soon! I could listen to that meeting of minds for many more hours.
