Nerdist Podcast #19: Doug Benson

Doug Benson played the role ofย  “Doug Benson” in Super High Me, Chris hasn’t watched American Idol since Season 2, Jonah liked the Derrick Comedy movie “Mystery Team”, and Matt wishes Dave Matthews would come to him in the night and give him “The Eternal Kiss,” like some kind of jazzy vampire.

BONUS! Hard ‘n Phirm song “SFH”, available here.

  1. Chris says:

Hey. Great show. Re: Casino gaming. Indian (Native) casinos can operate because tribal land (reservations) is considered a sovereign nation. Anyway, good job being funny.

  2. Amanda says:

Clearly I am behind the times (I just started to listening from the beginning about a week ago) however, I am really enjoying these podcasts. It is sort of like I’ve time travelled back two years. And it was awesome to hear some props for Macgruber. When my fiance and I saw it in the theatre we loved the movie and did not understand why critics hated it and people didn’t go see it. Can’t wait to catch up to the current podcasts!

  3. anthony says:

this podcast is great. chris, you should DEFINITELY see MacGruber if you haven’t already. Really fucking funny.

Also, interesting note, weed is totally legal in Breckenridge, CO. Anybody can walk right into a dispensary and buy weed and smoke all around town. Apparently the city pushed the law through because law enforcement was spending too much time busting skiers/boarders.

  4. Deb in Seattle says:

Hey Chris! Another great podcast, thanks so much!
I saw Ghostbusters at a local theater last year and it was packed! So amazing seeing it on the big screen again. I wish more movie theaters would screen classic movies.

  5. JonahSucks says:

I somewhat agree with the comment of Cosmo727, but think it’s usually more Jonah who is interjecting his weak stories and name drops. Chris and the guests* keep me coming back. Jonah, and sometimes “the other guy” should keep quiet more. They really arn’t adding much to the show and it just sounds cluttered with all the extra chatter. It takes a good sense of timing and tact to play the side-kick spot, and Jonah and “tog” just don’t seem to have it.

*Loved Doug Benson, Weird Al, Rob Zombie, Andy Richter, Drew Carey, and Adam Carolla especially.

  6. Rich Davis says:

    Chris,

Hilarious Podcast. Had to buy the song at the end. Too Funny!

  7. Brandon says:

Damn, Benson’s all over the place. Just finished listening to him on the Carolla Podcast. Great stuff all around guys. Found out about you guys through Carolla’s website, and boy am I glad I decided to click that link. I can’t decide which Podcast I enjoy more.

But I have to say that when things were slowing down, Chris made sure to bring the funny. I really enjoy the pacing of the podcast by Chris. He can make boring things fun and interesting.

But you make some good points, my favorite podcasts have been when the person being interviewed can really convey their own personal insights and points of view because you don’t find that traditional media – which is usually just about plugging things and sound bites.

  9. Paul says:

Of course, in the description you meant to say, “some kind of jazzy Dracula.” This is a forgivable oversight, not because this is a GREAT podcast (which it is), but because the image of a Jazzy Vampire conjures up visions of Dracula wearing either: (1) leotards and legwarmers, ready to jazzercize, or (2) a cool beatnik beanie, ready to do heroin while listening to Ornette Coleman play a bunch of notes really fast. Hooray for long sentences!

  10. Cosmo727 says:

Chris, For what it is worth…I have been listening to your podcasts as I commute on my bike. Yesterday I listened to your podcast with Benson. While I have enjoyed the first couple of these podcasts…yesterday’s was hard to listen to. You stepped on Benson’s stories 9.9 out of 10 times…and it sounded like it was more important that you were in the game of “who do I know” than in supporting him to be funny. As a litmus test…anytime your guest has to say “where was I going with that story”, you have interrupted too much. Benson said that several times throughout the interview.

I like your work and will listen more but the balance needs to be 25% you and the rest the guest otherwise it sounds too much like it is all about you.

    Matt

  11. Patti says:

Thanks for the great podcast. Doug was a terrific guest, and you, as always, were a great host. Love the SFH song! Thanks for adding that on. Keep up the good work!

  12. Chris says:

Hadrian wasn’t just a Roman Emperor, he had his own wall! Like most walls, it was designed to keep the Scottish at bay. (This was, inexplicably, the actual reason for the Great Wall of China.)

Friendster is actually doing fine, because it is the biggest social media website in Asia.

  13. Horton says:

I love ‘SFH’. Just bought it on the Zune store a few weeks back… yep, the Zune store.

  14. wi_ngo says:

I just came here to say that that song is SUPER EFFING AWESOME. Thanks for the download link! And keep up the great work with the ‘cast.

  15. Dave Grizz says:

Great episode, but I have a feeling that first pod with Doug was better #howwouldiKnow #WritingOnYourNerdist.comCommentsSectionLikeItsTwitterOrSomething #imretardedmyapologies

  16. Bill says:

Chris, please have someone update the IMDb entry for “Trashed” with the names of the writers that were involved.

  17. Ian B says:

Chris- I’m a big fan of you pronouncing the word “Robots” as “Robits” in your 1930’s-ish voice. Please continue generating comedy as such.
Also any thoughts on your and Adam Carolla’s inaugural podcasts featuring slide whistles? Successful podcast Conspiracy?

  18. steve says:

i wish there was a magical substance that i could ingest that would make Macguruber funny..oh wait!

  19. Chris Hardwick says:

Patrick: I love the word “bonerload”

Greg: I was pretty sure I was wrong about the vocoder, so I don’t think you’re being a dick. Correct information is always a good thing! Thanks!

  20. Greg says:

Enjoying the episode very much, just a quick note though:
Peter Frampton made the Talk Box famous, not the vocoder. Not trying to be a dick, just pointing it out.

Keep up the good work dude!

  21. Patrick Collins says:

19 eps in and not a fail in sight. Not only do you bring the awesome in snagging entertaining guest(s), but you also provide a bonerload of consistant hilarity each and every week. Keep up the good work Mr. Hardwick.
