Nerdist Podcast #104: ROVE McMANUS/AXIS OF AWESOME

One for Australia with this Aussie-themed episode of the Nerdist Podcast! Brilliant talk-show host Rove McManus came to our NerdMelt space and talked about comedy down under, touring, and how you decide to leave a successful show on its 10th anniversary. If that twern’t enough, musical comedy group Axis of Awesome rounded out a splendid night with hilariousness. Btw, Australians don’t really drink a lot of Foster’s, it turns out. That’s just something they tell us here.

  1. Trisha Lynn says:

RIP Da Vinci’s Notebook, and I thought the same thing when I heard the song for the first time. But they kinda went a different way.

Which reminds me, why haven’t Paul & Storm been on the show?

  2. bob says:

Da Vinci’s Notebook, Title of the Song- better group, better song

  3. chris says:

For Jonah Ray….On Rove McManus’s show you mentioned you like to say you were Canadian when going to foreign lands. Yes it is always nice to be a Canadian when you are in a foreign country. As an actual Canadian in a foreign country the people treat us friendly, buy us drinks (when Americans aren’t around), open doors to enchanted worlds of awesome. Impersonating a Canadian may give you some of this but they know. It is just like in Inglorious Basterds with the German three vs. the English three. Americans cannot talk about hockey in the same way. They don’t know the right way to say ‘eh’ or say ‘yeah he is Canadian’ for every Canadian actor like Ryan Reynolds, John Candy or Micheal J. Fox.

Anyways tit for tat Jonah Ray. Sometimes I just dress up in my American shirt in Europe and do the most douchiest things and yell ‘I’m American fuck yeah.’

  4. J says:

I love it when you guys talk about editing stuff out of the podcast but leave it all in anyway. It always makes me laugh. Thanks!

  5. steve says:

All of Chris’s vocalizations sound a lot like Scott Stapp.

    Sorry big C.

  6. Julian says:

In regards to Chris’ accent work, I’d say his Aussie was pretty spot on! Most Americans mangle it severely but I was really impressed, really showed he’d spent some time down here and actually listened to the sounds people made with their mouths.

  7. ColinJ says:

It’s weird hearing Rove ‘working blue’, as they say.

I remember seeing the first season of his show on Channel Nine when it was on at about 11.30 at night. It was hilarious, off-the-cuff and completely shambolic. He and the rest of his crew all got equal laughs and it felt like a great yuck-fest among friends.

Then he went to Channel Ten and it gradually became just another corporate chat show with vacuous celebrity guests. And Rove himself took over the whole show, and to be honest, he’s not much of an interviewer.

He’s no Shaun Micallef, that’s for sure.

  8. Brandon says:

@Dot, I think that was the joke Jonah was making. He was just throwing out a similar sounding song by a 90’s metal/industrial/ group. Firestarter and Du Hast have a similar feel to them. I could be wrong, but that’s how it came across.

  9. zingle says:

Rove is such a pandering hack.

  10. Lucy says:

This podcast was perfect I laughed so hard.
Rove is very modest in Aus his show was like Conan or any of the late night hosts in the US; it was massive, he won three Gold Logies (equivalant of emmy awards).
I agree with the above comment about Hamish & Andy being on the show, they are pretty much the Australian version of Chris & Matt (maybe a bit funnier).

  11. Dot says:

Look, I love you guys. There was so much to love about the show with Rove and Axis of Awesome. There is just a couple things that distracted me from loving this completely.
    a) Why does Chris have to do impressions of anybody on with an accent? I do recall one British guest (Simon Pegg?) telling him “don’t do that”. Chris, you seemed nervous, like a little kid showing off for company. Just be yourself.
    b) That firestarter thing really got on my nerves. Christ didn’t sound like Prodigy or Fred Schneider. He sounded like a dalek, which, though I love Dr. Who, I really hate that voice. It grates.
    c) Du Hast is not Prodigy. Its Rammstein. Sorry. little bit of a music nerd here.

Remember. I do love you guys.
And keep em coming! more Australian, British (especially Yorkies n Mankies), Welsh, Irish, Scottish, Canadian and other comedy nerds of many stripes. Just leave the accents to them.

  12. JM Bell says:

    Great episode.
    Laughed my ass off.

  13. Lea T. says:

hi! awesome as always! I was just wondering, when you start doing the tv show on G4, will it still be possible to get it online? I’d really wish so, because I don’t get that channel, and I’m gonna sell my tv anyway…plz keep it online! I love you so much!

  14. Simon says:

Just on the Melbourne Comedy Festival, its possible to come down here for it amd not need to stay the whole month. Theres a show called Headliners that shows about four comics a night. The roster changes most nights and it allows for comics with a killer 20 minute set to perform. I saw Moshe Kasher, Hannibal Buress and Garfunkle & Oates that way. They stayed for about a week.
Marc Maron was also out here for a week in melb.
    Think about it Nerdist Lads!

  15. anna says:

Loved the show! Had no idea who Rove was but thought he was hilarious and loved hearing about Australia.

By the way, gonna drop a little traffic wisdom: in New Jersey and Cincinnati, they’re Round Abouts, and (NJ) Hook Turns are called Jug Handles.

  16. Pieter says:

As an addendum to the Foster’s story. I’m Dutch and the same goes for Heineken (it’s awful, don’t drink it, why do you think we export that shit).

  17. Dean says:

  18. agirlyman says:

If I didn’t know who you were Big C, looking at you, I could see you as one of those stuck up stewardess on a plane. Is there a term for a guy stewardess? I mean besides “Gay”?

  19. rina says:

It would be so awesome if you got the Australian comedy duo Hamish & Andy on the show. Hilarity would most definitely ensue.

  20. Nord says:

Loved the question too, but it didn’t seem like they understood the meaning of it.
Positively surprised by Rove who came across as genuinely funny guy, which wasn’t always the case on his show.

  21. Rob O. says:

I almost lost some of my FlavorSplash through my nose when Matt said “You can live with Aids. Aids is great now.”

  22. Ally says:

    First time commenting from London.
Great show once again, I love the ‘What have we learned?’ question, guessing that was a nod to Rove.

  23. Eric says:

The national bird of Iceland is the puffin, and many restaurants serve it (the cuteness makes it extra delicious).

  24. Taylor says:

Dude! I don’t know when I’ve laughed so hard listening to a podcast. I think it drew some looks on the train this morning.

I used to work for a place in San Jose that sells Australian stuff…food, souvenirs, kangaroo paw bottle openers (and roo scrotum bottle openers!). Working for an Aussie and being immersed in Aus culture for two years has left me both scarred and actuely in tune with their humor. Fantastic!

Definitely recommend checking out Paul Verhoeven (not the director) as a terrific Aussie comic and radio talent. @paulverhoeven on the Twit-O-Graph.

  25. Beth Kaelin says:

Can I just say how sexy the Australian accent sounds? I can? Good.

  26. Joe says:

How many long-term girlfriends has Chris had? He seems to lament his sexual prowess more than he maybe should.

  27. Ben Clarkson says:

I think its time for Myra Booey to spin of on his own podcast, so he can finally finish a sentence.

  28. ubergeek says:

Awesome podcast lads, as usual. Mini wah wah gripe. Jonah, you mentioned ‘Once were Warriors’ during the intro about Australia. That movie was about life in a very small part of New Zealand!!!! That’d be like Rove saying Rocky is a very patriotic film about a Canadian boxer. Maaaaaate, I love you man but shit man, Geography major much?

  29. Julian says:

As a native Australian, I have to confess that I used to dislike Rove. If I’m honest it’s most likely because I was young and brash and the big targets were the easiest to hit and to hate, and for a while he was the biggest thing around.

Nevertheless, I have to confess I’ve been awaiting this podcast with earnest anticipation ever since it was announced. It’ll be good to hear from the little guy again, now that he’s effectively entirely off the radar down here. Funny how that works…

Also, you should try and get Chris “Angry Boy” Lilley on. Or Wilfred’s Jason Gann.

  30. Scott S says:

We should be given Aussies more often. But we’d run out too soon! Why aren’t they filling up their continent better?

  31. Mike says:

First episode I’ve felt the need to comment on, great show! Axis of Awesome’s “How to Write a Love Song” reminds me of Da Vinci’s Notebook’s “Title of the Song”, and that’s not a bad thing. May have to look for some of their stuff.

  32. Ali says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who heard crickets.

Worst college mascot – UC Santa Cruz’s Banana Slugs.

Rove and The Axis of Awesome were hilarious. The latter get extra points for the TARDIS tattoo.

  33. J-Rod says:

Forgot to mention when Rove meets Elmo are some of my favourite clips on Youtube.

Big C -> Kevin Clash on the Nerdist?

  34. B.J. says:

Trebek: Technical name for swimming pool after an Olympic diver hits his head.

    Me: What is AIDS fountain?

  35. Quincy Stanton says:

    Hilarious. Fuckin love it.

  36. Wesley Marshall says:

I was there for that show, great episode. If I remember correctly sound cut out at some point.

  37. Fantas says:

    Crickets in the background throughout?

    Anyone else hear that?

  38. J-Rod says:

Today was a Shitty Day. One of the worst in ages.

It’s nearly midnight and the Nerdist Podcast has allowed me to finish this crappy day with 90 minutes of laughter.

    Thank You.

  39. Rory says:

Excited to listen to it while I fill up my mouth with gauze after having my teeth pulled out. I hope Axis of Awesome have updated their 4 chord song. It’s absolutely wicked!!

  40. tony says:

wtf is with the podcast files? – after i’ve listened it does not remove itself from itunes when i refresh the list. by now i’ve selected ‘allow auto delete’ too many times.

  41. Amanda says:

Oh man, I shouldn’t have listened to this episode at work; I had to cough constantly to cover up my laughing, but I couldn’t force myself to stop listening. Absolutely hilarious!

  42. Nick Sierra says:

@Wow. If you can’t take the AIDS jokes get out of the sex kitchen. Also, I imagine anyplace Big C shows up as a place called “the sex kitchen.”

  43. Vincent S says:

Finally! I have waited oh so long for this. I really liked Rove but just stopped watching his show after some years. ๐Ÿ™ He should have brought Tripod. They’re the funny nerd three man band here in Australia. But Axis of Awesome’s getting famous now… not bad.

Probably my the best Tripod song (imo).

  44. Wow says:

Seriously? You should have cut out the whole AIDS section.

  45. bj says:

  46. Brian E. says:

I love Rove! Can’t wait to listen to this.

  47. markus says:

  48. PinkMnM says:

I’m going to listen to this Podcast, and fold some clothes. Woo Hoo!
