Nerdist: Play – Which Console Had The Better Year?

There are consumers from all over the world, sitting in a coliseum packed full of ravenous console extremist. In the center of the arena engaged in a gruesome death match: the Nintendo Wii U, the Xbox One, and the PlayStation 4. The last year has been a knock-down, drag-out battle between the Big Three, and judging by the way things are going, the dust is far from settling as they each aim to become the champion of home gaming consoles.

Today on Nerdist: Play, we’ll be taking a look at 2014 and pulling out the report cards for the Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U consoles. Before we get into the aforementioned, we’ll be finding out exactly why Destiny players can’t handle “The Truth.”

I asked you guys on Twitter what console you believed had the most solid year, and here are some of the answers that didn’t make it into today’s episode:

I have owned the Xbox One since Day One, and just picked up a PS4 a couple weeks ago. (I know some will take this as an offense, but I have never been into Nintendo. Mario, Zelda never really appealed to me, and my first console was a Super Nintendo, But I didn’t get into games until PS1 and didn’t get hardcore into FPS’s until Halo on the Original Xbox So I don’t see a WiiU in my future)

I think Xbox One had some good exclusives, and is a solid system that I’ll play all of my cross platform titles on, and is my Console of choice. I bought my PS4 solely for Exclusives. The Last of Us Remastered has been a blast (Since I haven’t owned a Playstation since the PS2 in 2001) But now I get to experience it how It was meant to be played. I have high hopes for the Order 1886, and I’m interested in this Bloodborne game, and hope to see more of it. Plus Uncharted 4 looks awesome, but I’ll be going in blind, since I haven’t played the first 3 (Uncharted Collection anytime soon Playstation?)

I just really want to see more of Crackdown 3, and hopefully a new Gears of War (I’m betting 2016 for that one though) Plus everyone will be playing Halo 5, which I’m hoping will be good. Plus the beta isn’t too bad.

The important thing is that when people say “PS4, XBOX ONE” they actually also say “WIIU” now.

Alamo Drafthouse!! Props on the Jacket.  I would say owning all three systems…that sales wise ps4 did.  But I have been having more fun on xbox one.  But I am happy the Super Smash Bros finally came out for the U.  I am excited about 2015 for sure.

I am 52 and I love my PS4, it’s about the games and not taking over the TV

  6. Jonathan says:

I believe in gaming on all platforms, if you’re a video game player there is no ONE system to play games on…unless someone is paying you to back their system 😛
Nintendo has some great titles now, but they need to ditch the terrible gamepad…I own the pro controller, but it still feels odd having to turn off the gamepad screen while using a better and more comfortable controller. Oh well, maybe they will make another Gamecube, which was awesome.
Microsoft has the most innovation in their corner, unfortunately they fumbled the ball out of the gate with a terrible misunderstanding of what they were trying to do. That said, they didn’t take long to turn it around and they keep getting more incredible with each effort. Really excited to see what next year brings though, as the first year on any console is never that great.
Sony may finally get my money next year, admittedly I always wait to buy their product. They rarely offer anything different that I can’t play elsewhere, but I can never resist a Naughty Dog game. Sony started the console off to a bad start in my opinion, because they more or less pointed a finger at Microsoft and laughed while trying to pretend like they weren’t making the same mistakes. Just show your games and leave the b.s. out of the process, if your product is good you don’t need to use childish tactics like Sony did. I’m not sure I’ll play too much more than Uncharted on my PS4 when I get it, but I’m used to that happening when I buy a Sony system. Again, I hope for a better year next year…who knows, maybe Sony will surprise me and do more than the same old thing with better graphics and no innovation…but I doubt it.
I love gaming, and always get every system, but I enjoyed my Xbox One the most for gaming, with my Wii-U getting use for games that make my heart smile…and PS4 will be added to my collection, but not until they give me a worthwhile reason.

  7. Nick Murphy says:

I can’t speak good or ill about MS or Sony, but purely as a Nintendo guy, who wasn’t really sure he was going to get a Wii U in the first place, I have purchased more games this year than probably in any other year ever: Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, and Smash Bros — plus 3 Amiibos and probably Toad’s Treasure Tracker.

Wow man what a loaded question to ask. Let the fanboy/fangirl fighting begin! Also I am ultra jealous that you have that 20th anniversary PS4.
