Like it or not, video game livestreaming is big business. Such a statement could be a quotable from Captain Obvious– all you have to do is look at platforms like Twitch.tv or the newly formed YouTube Gaming, and the potential of this new form of interactive entertainment will appear to you as clear as day. However, some of the veterans of mainstream entertainment don’t quite see what the commotion is about. And some, like comedian Jimmy Kimmel, have voiced their confusion and distaste for livestreaming and it becoming a phenomenon. This has lead to many gamers striking back against Kimmel and his comments, some of whom used venomous, tasteless and hate-fueled replies that have reflected badly on the entire gaming community.
My response to this matter takes center stage on this week’s Nerdist: Play, and while I don’t have the same views as Kimmel on video game livestreaming, I also don’t support the hateful trolling spewed in his direction by certain members of the gaming community. Are folks overreacting to a comedian doing his job? Or were Jimmy Kimmel’s comments in poor taste and worthy of the backlash? Share your thoughts on the matter in the comments below.
Nerdist Gaming is growing and you can find us all over the internet these days!
