Nerdist News: The Best of Nerdist in 2014

As the old saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. Considering what a blast 2014 has been for all of us at Nerdist, we must be Time Lords because it feels like 2015 snuck up on us in the blink of an eye. Of course, if we were true Time Lords, we would know not to blink, but that’s why Peter Capaldi is the Doctor and we aren’t. But, I digress.

The year-end is always a time for reflection and looking back at how far we’ve come, and baby, we’ve come a long way. So, to celebrate all the awesomeness in 2014 at Nerdist HQ (and beyond), on today’s Nerdist News, Jessica counts down the best of Nerdist in 2015. Of course, we could only fit 5 items in the video, and that didn’t seem fair to you, so here is the remainder of the top 10 for your reading pleasure.

10. You like us, you really like us!

This year, we passed two seriously sweet milestones on Facebook and YouTube when we crossed the 1,000,000 mark for likes and subscribers respectively. Please don’t take this as us bragging (okay, maybe a little bit), but we were beyond stoked to see how far we’ve come in the past few years. While we’re thrilled to be reaching each and every one of you, there’s something a little bit mind-boggling and humbling knowing that one million of you (on two different platforms) want to stay up to date with us and those taste morsels of USDA-grade prime Internet that we spend our days slaving over a hot computer to make for you. So, from the bottom of our hearts, we say thank you. Now if each of you just tell one million of your friends…

9. Geek meets chic at the Her Universe Fashion Show at Comic-Con

Classically, those of the nerdy persuasion aren’t known for their sartorial expertise. While we may be able to name every Companion from memory, we may not be able to realize that a graphic tee doesn’t constitute formal wear. OR SO YOU WOULD THINK! This year, we blew the lid off that old myth by teaming up with Her Universe and Hot Topic for the first-ever geek couture fashion show at San Diego Comic-Con. From across the myriad multiverse of fandoms, Ashley Eckstein helped us to assemble 36 designers who were inspired by all manner of pop culture to make fabulously fashionable pieces. Your move, Versace.

8. The Nerdist Store opens its doors

And speaking of fashionably nerdy gear, I would be remiss in my duties if I failed to mention that 2014 saw the official opening of the Nerdist Store. While they may not be high concept runway-ready pieces like you saw at Comic-Con, they are most assuredly functional, fashionable, and the best way to wear your Nerdist fandom quite literally on your sleeve. From the Swiss Army-knife that is the Ultimate Convention Hoodie to a sleek Enjoy Your Burrito shirt to what is possibly the single greatest item in the store, the first-ever The Dan Cave t-shirt, the Nerdist Store has a little something for everyone in your life. Go ahead, swaddle yourselves in us. We’re great cuddlers and we make great gifts.

7. The launch of Nerdist Presents

I’ll be the first to admit it, you guys. We’ve been pretty sketchy over the last couple of months. No, no, not like Derek from Accounting who hangs out in the parking lot behind Jack in the Box on his lunch break. No one is that sketchy. I’m talking about the launch of Nerdist Presents, our bi-monthly video series that curates the best in sketch comedy, music videos, parodies, and much more from across the Nerdist-verse and the Nerdist Alliance. From a Thanksgiving-tastic Hunger Games tribute to the pitch-perfect parodic stylings of The Hillywood Show to seeing what would happen if Batman’s parents weren’t really dead and beyond, Nerdist Presents is your one-stop shop for making sure that you have a smile plastered on your face well into 2015. Plus, it’s waaay safer than the Joker Toxin.

6. Moving in with our pals from Geek & Sundry and Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party

While we loved sharing a place with our pals from RocketJump, we bid them adieu earlier this year and moved into a different light industrial part of Los Angeles (that still looks like it houses Arrow‘s villains-of-the-week) with some very exciting new roommates: Geek & Sundry and Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party. That’s right — our new office isn’t just us; it’s the headquarters for the entire Legendary Digital Network. Not only do we get to share a rad new workspace with our friends, but we get to fight over who gets the last K-Cup and who is responsible for replacing the toner in the copier!

In all seriousness, though, seeing our little family grow even larger has been one of the coolest things to witness over the past year, and I cannot wait to see where we’re heading in 2015 and beyond.

Whew — that’s an awful lot of recollecting! None of this would be possible without you guys, and as such we want to hear from you. What was your favorite Nerdist moment in 2014? Share it with us in the comments below!
