If you are an Angeleno, today is a day of reckoning. It. Is. HAWT. It is the sort of mind-rotting heat that makes you feel like a walking virus, primed to infect the next passerby with the fever (it turns out that the only antidote, of course, is more cowbell). Though the cowbell from Blue Oyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” is the only known panacea, we here at Nerdist HQ want to give you as much musical anelgesic as possible. At the very least, you will be distracted, and that is, perhaps, one of the best gifts of all.
AC Newman of The New Pornographers stopped by the Nerdist studios for the premiere of Nerdist Sessions. After an acoustic performance of “High-Rise”, the songwriter sat down to chat with me about who he though might win in an Candian indie band Royal Rumble. Check back next month for a brand new episode!
Spike Jonze and Elle Fanning surprised Karen O with a seemingly extemporaneous music video for “Ooo”, the first track from the singer’s brand new Crush Songs. The video was shot backstage at the Metropolitan Opera House during New York Fashion Week. [VICE]
Lorde has been flexing a couple of covers on her current tour. Check out her performance of Kanye‘s “Flashing Lights” and Bon Iver‘s “Heavenly Father”. If you live in the Los Angeles area, be sure to snag tickets to her upcoming show at the Greek! [Pitchfork]
Tweens, a scrappy “trash pop” band form Cincinnati released a live version of “Forever” from their debut eponymous album.
Conan—who just dazzled u at The Simpsons Take The Bowl–is honoring George Harrison the week of September 22 with performances from Beck, Norah Jones, and Dhani Harrison, all of whom will be playing music from the late Beatle’s catalog. This will coincide with Harrison’s forthcoming, comprehensive box set, which I cannot wait to get my hands on.
Drake (whats up comment section?) took to Instagram to photoshop himself as Draco Malfoy for some reason. Really waiting for this to become a sketch on SNL soon.
Panda Bear a/k/a Noah Lennox of Animal Collective released a new, charachteristaclly amorphous mixtape. The genre bending producer is still reportedly working on his follow up to 2011’s Tomboy. [Pitchfork]
Miley Cyrus (refer to parenthetical after Drake) made a surprisingly faithful, if shoddily recorded, cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Baby I’m Gonna Leave You”. Be mad about it. Be happy about it. It is a thing that already exists. Also, someone please get me that hot dog t shirt for Christmukkah. Kthanks.
Stream new albums from Leonard Cohen, Tweedy, Mapei, Sondre Lerche, Perfume Genius, and GOAT over at NPR First Listen. This is one of the best weeks for new album streams that we have had all year. Very excited to dig into all of these. [NPR]
Stream Nick Hakim‘s new EP, Where Will We Go Pt 2 below. He is turning into my favorite new artist of the year, and “Lift Me Up” is unquestionably one of the most inspired songs of the year.
