Nerdist @ Meltdown’s 1st Live Event! BLACK DYNAMITE PANEL, 4/4

Holy crap you guys! It’s happening! It’s happening!!!

Several weeks ago, Matt, Jonah and I had the pleasure of podcasting with Kevin Smith at his versatile omni-space, The Smodcastle. At the time, I had been looking for an office to plant the tiny sapling of Nerdist Industries, a hive for all of the Nerdist activities and hopefully spawning ground for new ideas. The second I walked into Smodcastle a light went off. YES. THIS!!! Our offices needed to have a performance space. A place where we could do our live podcasts and experiment with other live shows. As an LA comic, my biggest complaint is the lack of quality venues. There are certainly a few, like UCB or the Tigerlily show and maybe 2 or 3 others I can think of.  It had to be done, and I openly admit that I stole the idea from Kevin.

For a few weekends I drove and actually WALKED around Hollywood and Silverlake, looking for something, anything. But the pickins were slim. Casually mentioning this to Jonah Ray he instantly blurted out, “You should talk to Gaston over at Meltdown. He’s got office space and is always looking to do fun stuff. I’ve done several shows at Meltdown, like Jonah, Kumail & Emily Gordon’s excellent Wednesday night show. Our live stand-up special was recorded there. It’s a GREAT space. The second I walked in, I knew it was perfect. And Gaston is a quality dude who has been serving up comics and toys to LA area nerds since 1992. AND SO IT CAME TO PASS. Note, we are not taking over all of Meltdown, just the performance space and the offices above it. We will aspire to program nerdy comedy shows of varying nature (stand-up, sketch, panels, movie nights) as many nights of the week as people want to come see shows. Tickets will be in the $10 to $15, depending on the event. This is not designed to “get me rich” off ticket sales. Running a performance space costs a bit o the green, so that’s where the majority of that money will go. We also will tweak the space a little, build out the stage and upgrade the a/v system. IT WILL BE FUN.

And so it gives me TREMENDOUS pleasure to announce our first event!!!!

  2. Alex says:

This will be one of the greatest shows ever, & I have to live on the OTHER SIDE OF THE FREAKIN’ WORLD.

C’mon guys come to Melbourne, Australia. We have a Comedy Festival! No honestly it’s a really good one! It’s the 2nd best in the world after Montreal! (Or at least that’s what we tell everyone)

    The show better get uploaded.

  3. Luis says:

Buying tickets right now, I want a picture with Michael Jay White and my wife wants one with chris! Hopefully we get them!

Ha-ha! I threw that shit before I walked in the room!

  4. Chad H says:

Good luck on your show, one day I might make it west to see one live.

  5. Richard Davis says:

Oh WOW!!!, Congratulations Chris…, Meltdown Comics is a Great Space. And the folks (Gaston & Co.) are always really cool and nice. This is truly great news.

  6. Marcus says:

This is crazy good. It looks like my friends and I will driving an hour and battle the traffic on a Monday night to be there.

  7. Sean says:

p.S. I watched Black Dynamite for the first time last night and had to watch it again today because it was so good.

  8. Sean says:

Son of a B!tch! Why do I have to live on the East Coast. I have wanted to go to SModcastle since Prima Nochta this summer and when Chris and Kevin did their show together I fell in love with the Nerdist Podcast and have gone back and listened to the majority of the Nerdist shows and will have them all listen to by the end of the week. I wish I had the financial means and times to go out west for a week or two and go to every show out there. Well congratulations Chris, Johna, and Matt on getting a space to grow the show, I feel like it has really helped the SModcast brand and hope it does all that and more for the Nerdist and can’t wait to hear things grow and change from here.

  9. Mack says:

Chris, will you be recording these events and releasing them on itunes? I know these are shows that people have to pay to get into so you could probably charge money for them. Maybe the events could be in video format too. Spending 10,15 bucks would defiantly be worth it.

  10. threetoesoffury says:

“your knowledge of scientific biological transmogriphication is only outmatched by your zest for kung-fu treachery!”

Chris: for those of us sucks trapped a zillion miles away, will you be soliciting questions for the Q/A? If so, i’ll start firing some away…

    1) (obvious)…Sequel please!?! when??

    2) Michael Jai White: “whats the likelyhood we’ll ever get a dvd release of Kill Bill with your scene in it? Quentin is showing a new edit of the flick next month at a film festival..any chance your scene will be included? What was it like working on Kill Bill?

    3) Cast/Crew: Can you each name your favorite Blacksploitation flix? Was there any specific ones that were strong influence? (im thinking maybe “three the hard way”?)

    4) Michael Jai White: Blood and Bone rules! Also very sequel-worthy!!!!!

    Thanks Chris and Nerdist Krew!

Peace .n. Can You Dig It,
    Three Toes of Fury

  11. threetoesoffury says:

“HA! I threw that before i came in the room!”

OOOOOOO im beyond jealous! Black Dynamite is one of the best flicks ive seen in a long looooong time. The highest compliment i can pay it is that as soon as it ends i want to rewatch it. HUGE request: if they dont film it, can someone post some footage afterwards somewhere? Dont do it for me…do it for the orphans!!!

Peace .n. Black Dynamite II: Electric Boogaloo!

  12. MAXimiliano says:

God Dammit. I really want to go, Nerdist Podcast is my favorite nerd based, comic/mtv date show host, hosted, with a Doctor Who reference every episode podcast. And Black Dynamite is probably the funniest film I’ve seen for some time. Who knew Spawn was so damn funny. For reasons i don’t want to go into I can not drive out to L.A. but maybe I can take a flight from the Sacramento area to L.A.

  13. Scott says:

I assume the panel will be posted as a podcast because this sounds amazing

  14. rikkiwon says:

please keep me on your list….ive worked on my LA comic still in birth

  15. Spider_Dude says:

Finally! I aimlessly roam the streets of Hollywood. But now i can do it with a better destination in mind than coffee refills from the 7-11pm Sunset Blvd! Yay!

  16. Alfonso says:

I have never wanted to live in “The Other SC” as much as I have at this very moment!

  17. Anita says:

I need pictures of this since I can’t go to LA!

  18. Livius says:

If only I lived in the area.
Any chance for a video podcast??

  19. Jacob says:

That sounds magsetical! I really hope this becomes a reoccurring thing

  20. Kiala Kazebee says:

You know. We have comics shops IN PORTLAND TOO. Good ones.
