While Nathan For You is waiting for its second season on Comedy Central later this year, Nathan Fielder isn’t taking any break from his hijinks. In fact, Fielder is the mind behind the widely-reported Starbucks parody franchise known as Dumb Starbucks. Permits for what is being legally considered an parody/art exhibit were tied back to pranksters Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim‘s Abso Lutely Productions, producers of Nathan For You, and, of course, this Dumb Starbucks is located in the uber-hip LA neighborhood of Los Feliz.
It has all the trappings of a normal Starbucks except that the adjective “dumb” is in front of pretty much everything, including the entire menu and CDs that are for sale. As you can imagine, something that absurd drew queues way out the door, with locals lining up for hours waiting for Dumb Starbucks-brand coffee in the strip mall on Hillhurst Ave. Unfortunately, after two days, health officials shut Dumb Starbucks down for operating without a proper health code permit. There’s no word on what will happen next with Dumb Starbucks, but all the “art pieces” on display will surely fetch top dollar between Fielder’s fans and people that just want something that says “Dumb Starbucks” on it.
So, the fate of Dumb Starbucks may end here, but you can rest assured that Nathan Fielder has much more in store for all of us, whatever his next prank idea, as I examined in a piece I wrote here a few months ago, “The Anatomy of The Postmodern Prank.” If he could pull this off, as when he convinced people to text their parents about buying drugs only to deny any involvement in the prank he perpetrated, then Fielder could pull off almost anything.
