Back in April of 1994, Illmatic hit record shops and people started talking about this Nas dude up in New York. Everyone started looking at the album like it was part of some east coast response to the gangster rap/G-Funk coming out of the West Coast for a few years at that point.
Filmmaker One9 directed Nas: Time is Illmatic, a documentary about the creation of that seminal album as well as the influences that the man behind it poured into one of the great records of that decade (and maybe one of the most important in hip-hop). That film will be making its debut on October 1, so in conjunction with the release, Nas is headed on tour across 14 dates throughout the month of October.
Here’s where it gets nuts: each tour date will have Nas screening the doc followed by a full performance of Illmatic from beginning to end (except for the Rochester and Vegas dates – tough luck).
You can find the tour dates below. If you can’t make it out to any of the showings, Nas has released Illmatic XX which is a special edition version of the classic album. It’s a little pricey, but you should give it a listen. The doc is getting a national release but will also be available via Video on-demand and iTunes.
