If there is one thing that we learned from Special Agent Dale Cooper (besides that there is nothing that beats the taste sensation when bacon [hand clap] collides with ham) is that you should always take a break to treat yourself once a day. Unwind, kick back, and give yourself a treat. Agent Cooper had his damn fine cup of coffee, and today, given the joyous news that Twin Peaks shows ever will be returning after a quarter of a century, I decided to treat myself with one of my all time favorite parts of my favorite show: Angelo Badalamenti’s “Twin Peaks Theme.”
You know that feeling you get when you have witnessed something great, you have no idea why you think its so great, and then you immediately rewind to check it out once more? That is how the magnitude of both this show and this song ultimately unfurled for me. Sure, the introductory theme is a coruscating, beautiful tune replete with ethereal strings, keys, and a country truckin’ bassline. But that is only upon first listen–listening back, it becomes a menacingly hypnotic sway that hurls you deep into the the surreal and ominous underbelly of the seemingly quaint town in the Pacific Northwest, where everything exists in the abstract.
Cannot wait to see what has become of the residents of Twin Peaks in the twenty five years since last we saw them. (You think Log Lady’s log has rotted by now? Hope not.) I am excited to say hi to old friends and, of course, see them all descend into madness.
