Happy Monday, everyone! And welcome back to Movie Morsels, our daily recap of the latest film news. Today, we’re gonna get your week started right with some exciting news from Peyton Reed about Ant-Man and the Wasp, a first look at the new ice cars from Fast 8, a Deadpool 2 update, an unfortunate setback for a very promising Star Wars attraction, and word on where you can find the Avengers in Las Vegas!
Movie Morsels starts now!
Ant-Man and the Wasp
There are some spoilers in this item if you’ve managed to miss Captain America: Civil War. So, this is your last chance to skip ahead to the next item and remain blissfully ignorant about who that will affect the Ant-Man sequel. You’ve been warned!
During Civil War, Scott Lang had his “big” hero moment, but he was captured and unmasked by Iron Man’s forces. That means that his identity has been compromised, and that won’t be ignored in Ant-Man and the Wasp. If anything, director Peyton Reed seems eager to embrace Scott’s new status quo.
“Well he’s a fugitive in most of the first Ant-Man movie. He’s just a bigger fugitive now,” said Reed while speaking with Modern Myth Media. “I think that’s one of the fun things and challenges about the Marvel movies for us, for the directors and for the writers, is you do have to sort of consider what happened in the previous movies in terms of your jumping-off point for those characters. It’s something we talked a lot about early on and we definitely have stuff figured out, so there will be some big leaps forward.”
Reed also said that Evangeline Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne will be a true co-lead in this story, as “it’s every bit as much her movie as it is Scott Lang’s.” He added that “to show [the Wasp] finally fully formed in this movie is really exciting. We really get to introduce this character into that universe.” Reed also broadly hinted that Michael Peña’s Luis and the rest of Scott’s support team will be back as well.
Ant-Man and the Wasp will be released on July 6, 2018.
The production of Fast 8 has reached Iceland for the next part of its shoot. And it just would’t be a Fast and Furious film if that didn’t mean that Dom and his team will have some new vehicles to drive on the ice! The official Fast 8 facebook page dropped a few pics of the cars used in that sequence, including the new ride for Luke Hobbs and another Dodge Charger for Dom.
Fast 8 will roll into theaters on April 14, 2017.
20th Century Fox has yet to announce a release date for the Deadpool sequel, but we probably won’t have to wait very long! Executive producer Simon Kinberg has confirmed the return of the original screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese for Deadpool 2, as well as a timeframe for it to go in front of the cameras!
“The guys, Wernick and Reese, are working on the script, and we hope to have a script very soon,” said Kinberg during an interview with Collider at the Saturn Awards. “We hope to shoot the movie sometime at the beginning of next year.”
Unfortunately, we’ve got some very bad news about the museum that George Lucas had been planning to build in Chicago on a spot normally reserved for football tailgate parties eighttimes a year. Because of ongoing legal challenges from a group calling itself the Friends of the Parks, Lucas has canceled plans to build The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art on Chicago’s lakefront or anywhere else in the city.
“No one benefits from continuing their seemingly unending litigation to protect a parking lot,” said Lucas in a statement. “The actions initiated by Friends of Parks and their recent attempts to extract concessions from the city have effectively overridden approvals received from numerous democratically elected bodies of government.”
It’s a bummer, to be sure. Hopefully, Lucas won’t give up entirely and the museum will find a new home elsewhere.
Finally, we’ve got word via Gizmodo about the impressive new Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. (Scientific Training and Tactical Intelligence Operative Network) exhibit, which is now open at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. This a Disneyland level experience that exceeds even the original Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. that opened up in New York City two years ago.
Cobie Smulders reprised her role as Maria Hill in a special orientation video for the attraction, which also features rooms devoted to explaining the underlying science of several Avengers including Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, and Vision. There are also updated exhibits from every Marvel Studios film to date. It looks like a lot of fun!
